No New Fires

July 29 10

No new forest fires have been reported. There are currently four monitored fires and one fire supression. Five monitored fires, all in the Sioux Lookout Far North, have been declared out. The large amounts of rainfall in the last 48hrs helped extinguish these fires naturally. Five Initial Attack Type 1 FireRanger crews continue to fight fires in northern Manitoba and are being dispatched from Leaf Rapids, Paint Lake, Lynn Lake and Thompson. The fire hazard remains low for most of the region and moderate from Quetico Provincial Park to Thunder Bay and along the north shore of Lake Superior.

Fines for Illegal Outdoors Card

A Manitoba man has been fined $2,500 for using an Ontario resident outdoors card. For the purposes of obtaining an Ontario resident hunting and fishing licence, a resident is a person whose primary residence is Ontario, and who has resided in Ontario for a period of six consecutive months during the previous 12 months. Stabbing Investigation

July 29 10

On July 23, 2010 members of the Nishnawbe Aski Police Service (NAPS) were called to a reported stabbing in the community of Fort Hope north of Sioux Lookout. At the request of the NAPS, the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) North West Region Crime Unit, under the direction of the OPP Criminal Investigation Branch was called in to assist in this investigation. The deceased is a 17-year-old male from Fort Hope First Nation. A post mortem examination took place at Kenora Lake of the Woods District Hospital on July 25th. Currently in custody is a 16-year-old male from Fort Hope First Nation. He was arrested on July 24th and has been charged with Second Degree Murder contrary to the Criminal Code. He is to appear in Thunder Bay court August 3rd. The investigation is continuing.

Funding for Remote Airports

Greg Rickford, MP-Kenora, on behalf of Canada's Transport Minister John Baird, announced funding that will allow two remote airports in Northwestern Ontario to make important safety and infrastructure upgrades. The funding will enable the airports to maintain the certification standards of the runway surface with a supply of crushed gravel. This year, the Government of Canada will invest more than $42 million in safety-related improvements at airports across Canada. These improvements will be funded in 2010-2011 under the Airport Capital Assistance Program (ACAP).

No Forest Fires to Report

Heavy rainfall for Northwestern Ontario has knocked the forest fire hazard back down to low for Red Lake, Kenora, Fort Frances, Sioux Lookout and Dryden. When travelling on bush roads be careful and watch for washouts. If you find a washout notify your local Ministry of Natural Resources Office.

Stay Sober and Stay Safe!

With another long weekend and good weather ahead we can expect increase travel on our highways, trails and waterways. Members of your local OPP detachment reminds the public that they will be out patrolling the roads, trails and waterways with the goal of keeping our community safe. On the highways officers will be targeting aggressive drivers, impaired drivers and persons who fail to comply with the seatbelt laws. For those on the waterways you must have a life jacket for all occupants. Spotters are required when taking part in water activities such as skiing or boarding. Remember a marine operator's card is mandatory for anyone operating any vessel with a motor.

Food Bank Donations

On Friday, Kenora OPP will be at Safeway between 10:00 am and 2:00 pm collecting non perishable food products and cash donations in support of Salvation Army food banks and Making Kenora Home. They'll have a boat in the parking lot looking to fill it with community donations. For the Month of August the OPP boat and officers will be out front of the farmers market each Wednesday looking for donations for the food bank. Let's all do a little and make a difference.

Info Session on Highway Twinning

The Clearwater Bay Fire Hall hosted a public information session Saturday on the twinning of the Trans-Canada, that could expand the national highway to the edge of Lake of the Woods. McCormick Rankin Corporation has promised to honor public concern and consider an option for a more favoured route in the Clearwater Bay area to protect a trout habitat. More public information sessions are expected before construction begins.

Minister Visits NWO

Federal Minister of Citizenship, Immigration, and Multiculturalism, Jason Kenney held a reception at Kenora MP Greg Rickford's office on Monday morning in Kenora to greet new Canadians and those aspiring for citizenship. He said Manitoba in particular has stepped forward in welcoming people from all over the world, increasing its draw from 1,500 new Canadians each year to over 8,000. Kenney will be touring the riding with Rickford for the next few days.

Fatal Collision Victims Identified

July 27 10

OPP has identified the family of four who were involved in the fatal collision on highway 17A just east of Kenora on 22 July. A 46 year old female Chaenyeo Hyeon and 19 year old son Jeseon Kim were both fatally injured when the motor vehicle struck a rock cut. 47 year old male Soo Hyun Kim and 17 year old son Jewan Kim were transported to Thunder Bay and are listed as being in critical conditions. With the assistance of family friends in Winnipeg police were eventually able to coordinate next of kin notification in Korea.

Lock it or Lose it!

OPP have received a number of reports of vehicles being entered in Lakeside area over the weekend. Stolen property included an iPod, iTouch, CD's and car stereo. In all cases the vehicles were not locked making it easy for those taking advantage of the situation.

"No Gear, No Fear" Winners

Congratulations to the two lucky winners from Iowa who won the "No Gear, No Fear" V.I.P. Contest! Cindy Maring and her husband Randy will receive V.I.P. treatment while attending the Canadian Masters 2010 Windsurfing Championships and a chance to experience Dryden's Wilderness City. There was over two hundred entries from all around the world who had entered the contest from places like Germany, Texas, California, British Columbia, Nova Scotia, Midwest US and Ontario.

New Public Works Manager in Sioux Lookout

Matthew Stewardson has accepted the position of Public Works Manager in Sioux Lookout. The opportunity arose from a recent vacancy in the Public Works Supervisor position and in lieu of filling the Public Works Supervisor position, the Municipality elected to fill the position as a Public Works Manager, in order to ensure a succession plan was in place. Stewardson began working as Public Works Manager with the Municipality of Sioux Lookout on July 26th. Staff is excited about the prospect of collaborating with him as a key team member of the Management group.

Civic Pride Day

The City of Dryden and its partners are celebrating Civic Pride Day. The event will take place Tuesday, August 3rd as part of Dryden's centennial celebrations during Homecoming Week. The event, scheduled from 11:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. is centred around City Hall, at 30 Van Horne Avenue, but encompasses many City departments. Many events are planned including the official opening of the Roy Wilson Suspension Bridge, the judging of the Beard & Mustache Growing Contest, displays and open houses, the Leadership Dryden Alumni Family Classic Carnival, the Mayor's Tea, an Amazing Race, the announcement of the winners of the Hat Decorating Contest, a Chili Cook-off and entertainment. No New Fires

There were no new fires by late Monday. There are ten active fires in our region nine of which are being monitored and allowed to fulfill fire's natural role in the ecosystem. These monitored fires are all located in the Far North portion of Sioux Lookout and are not jeopardizing any values or communities.

Helicopter Crash Victims Identified

July 27 10

Ontario Provincial Police have identified the victims of a helicopter crash the happened Friday afternoon. A 19 year old Kenora man and a 21 year old Yellowknife man died when their Bell 206 B, hit a tower en route to Kapuskasing. The aircraft belonged to Essential Helicopters Flight Training School. Ontario Provincial Police received an emergency call from a berry picker at about 2 p.m. Friday. It took crews about 50 minutes to arrive at the scene.

Tractor Trailer Collision

July 26 10

Saturday morning, Wabigoon Fire received a 911 dispatch to attend to a Tractor Trailer Unit Motor Vehicle Collision. Dryden Fire Service Unit 25 was also dispatched as automatic mutual aid. On arrival Wabigoon command reported a single vehicle Tractor Trailer Unit flipped over. OPP were on scene directing traffic, the driver and passengers were out of the vehicle. No hazardous goods were reported on board the unit. Wabigoon Fire assisted for two hours with removal efforts and highway cleanup. Hwy 17 was completely closed for approximately 90 minutes while crews secured the vehicle and the towing company moved the unit to one side of the highway.

Centennial Week in Dryden

The Dryden District Chamber of Commerce is celebrating Dryden's Centennial Week by sponsoring the downtown Centennial Street Fair on Wednesday, August 4th. From 10:00 AM to 3:00 PM. The Chamber is closing down King Street from Earl Avenue to Whyte Avenue and hosting several events. There will be a King Street sidewalk sale, food vendors, Centennial merchandise and street entertainers.

Fines for Illegal Moose Hunting

July 26 10

A moose hunting trip resulted in $7,000 in fines for four southern Ontario men. Two men from Mississauga, one man from Brandon and one man from Brampton were fined $1,000 each for failing to provide informatio during an inspection. They are all prohibited from hunting in Ontario for six months. The ministry reminds hunters that it is illegal to shoot from, down or across a public road. Three New Fires Over Weekend

July 26 10

Three new fires were reported Friday; including two in the far north of the Sioux Lookout District and one in the Red Lake District have been assessed. The two Sioux Lookout District fires are being monitored. Red Lake Fire Number 42 has a FireRanger crew on it and reports are that they're making good progress on the fire with no problems anticipated. All three fires are in the far north.

New Law for Drinking and Driving

July 26 10

Drivers aged 21 years and under will be required to maintain a zero blood alcohol level while behind the wheel as of August 1st. The no-booze rule applies even if the driver has a full licence. The change is part of a package of driver reforms first introduced in 2008 by the Dalton McGuinty government. Currently, Ontario drivers with a G1 or G2 beginner's licence must maintain a zero blood alcohol level. However, motorists with a G licence won't get into trouble unless they're found to have a blood alcohol concentration (BAC) in the warning rage, 0.5 to 0.8, or higher. The new rule demands that all drivers up to the age of 21 years, maintain a zero BAC while motoring.

One New Fire Reported

One new fire was reported in the Sioux Lookout District yesterday. The number of active fires remains at 14 with the new fire, plus five in the Nipigon District, one in the Red Lake District and seven in the Sioux Lookout District. No problems have been reported with these fires. Most are located in remote locations in the north and are being monitored. More storm systems are tracking across the region and the fire hazard is low to moderate in most locations except for an area of high hazard in the northeastern sector of the region. Fatal Motor Vehicle Collision

July 23 10

The OPP is continuing their investigation into a single motor vehicle collision on highway 17A near the Jones Rd. Members from Kenora Detachment including the Technical Traffic Collision Unit attended the scene. Police confirmed that a 46 year old female and 19 year old male were fatally injured when west bound their Dodge Caravan left the highway yesterday morning. The vehicle struck a rock cut causing it to catch fire. The male driver 47 years old and another 18 year old male received life threatening injuries, they are both in critical condition in Thunder Bay. All four occupants were from Winnipeg Manitoba, police are attempting to locate next of kin.

Impaired Driver Arrested

July 23 10

Yesterday, Kenora OPP officers observed an east bound vehicle on Highway 17; the vehicle was crossing the centre line into the west bound lane. The vehicle was stopped and driver found to be impaired. A 34 year old female of Eagle Lake was charged with impaired driving.

Keewatin Beach Closed

July 23 10

The Northwestern Health Unit has posted Keewatin Beach as "Unsafe for Swimming" due to high bacterial counts found during routine beach sampling. Levels pose a possible risk to swimmers, including a variety of skin, eye, nose and throat infections and gastrointestinal illness. Closure signs are posted and the beach will remain closed until levels are satisfactory. Local beaches are tested regularly from early June until the end of August.

Highway Closed at Kenora Bypass

July 22 10

OPP has closed Highway 17A between the east junction with Highway 17 and Highway 658 (Redditt Rd). Shortly after 8am this morning officers responded to the scene of a single motor vehicle collision in the area of the Jones Rd. A single motor vehicle is in the west bound ditch and had caught fire. It is unknown at this time the number of occupants in the vehicle, Kenora Fire department has been called to assist. Police will advise when they are able to open this area to traffic. Stay tuned to Q104 for updates.

No New Fires Reported

There were no new fires reported in the West Fire Region by the evening of July 21. The number of active fires in the West Fire Region remains at 13, with five in the Nipigon District, one in the Red Lake District and seven in the Sioux Lookout District. No problems have been reported with these fires. Most are located in the north and are being monitored. More rain is in the forecast and the fire hazard is low across the central portion of the region and moderate in the south and north. The exception is the far northern sectors of Sioux Lookout and Nipigon Districts which are recording a high hazard. The forecast is calling for this high hazard to continue in the far north through to mid-week.

MNR Enforcement Blitz

July 22 10

The Ministry of Natural Resources laid 98 charges and issued 321 warnings during a seven-day enforcement blitz from June 17 to 24 throughout Northwestern Ontario. Conservation officers checked nearly 2,300 anglers on lakes and rivers in the northwest region. Officers checked anglers for compliance with the Fish and Wildlife Conservation Act and the Ontario Fishery Regulations. Officers also laid charges and warnings under the Liquor Licence Act for open liquor in a public place and the Small Vessels Act for not having appropriate safety equipment. Highway Infrastructure

Ontario's continued commitment to highway infrastructure throughout Northern Ontario will help improve safety and efficiency on northern roads for residents, visitors and industry. It will also help boost the economy in northern communities and create approximately 5,500 jobs across the North. Through the Northern Highways Program, the province will continue its investment in northern highways and infrastructure in 2010-11. The program will include expansion and safety initiatives and rehabilitation projects for roads, highways and bridges. The program will also provide highway rehabilitations and multi-year safety initiatives such as passing lanes, intersection upgrades and lighting improvements. Investing in highway infrastructure is an important part of the Open Ontario plan to create jobs and economic opportunities in Northern Ontario.

Summer Students with OPP

July 21 10

Kenora OPP summer students have been on the streets assisting the local detachment with crime prevention programs and identifying traffic issues within the community. During the Lock it or lose it student conducted sweeps on 2569 vehicles have been checked with 367 found to be unlocked. Students checked 2128 vehicles for seatbelt compliance and found 122 occupants not wearing the seatbelts. Students also observed the roundabout and noted of 151 vehicles 93 drivers exited without using their turn signals. Just a reminder that the use of signals while exiting the roundabout assists with the continuous flow of traffic. The OPP Marine unit also has three summer students who assist officers with their duties on the water ways in Kenora.

Impaired Driver Crashes

July 21 10

Saturday Kenora OPP officers responded to a single motor vehicle collision in Nestor Falls. The driver of a vehicle drove his vehicle off the highway into a tree. Citizens in the area noticed the driver had been drinking; they called police and secured the keys to the vehicle. A 53 year old man from Grimsby, Ontario was not injured but has been charged with impaired driving.

Hudson Boil Water Order Over

The Northwestern Health Unit wishes to advise the public that the Boil Water order for the community of Hudson is hereby rescinded. Laboratory testing of the water supply does not indicate the presence of bacteria.

Ticket Sales Extended

Harbourfest organizers have extended the early bird ticket deadline for this year's Harbourfest Country Night concert happening Sunday, August 1st. The cost of each ticket will remain at the early bird price of $40. The extension is for Sunday night only and tickets for Friday ($65) and Saturday ($55) still remain available. Sunday nights' outstanding line-up includes Grammy Award nominated Emerson Drive, future country star Jessie Farrell and one of the most energetic live country acts, Marc Ekins.

Fines for Illegal Hunting

Two eastern Ontario men have been fined a total of $4,000 for ignoring road restrictions while hunting near Nakina. The men pleaded guilty to disobeying a sign and trespassing to hunt. They were fined $2,000 each and the moose they harvested was forfeited to the Crown. No New Fires

There were no new fires in the region for the second day in a row. The forest fire hazard is low to moderate across the northwestern Ontario. Second Degree Murder Charge

July 19 10

On July 10th the Nishnawbe Aski Police Service were called to the nursing station in Deer Lake north of Sioux Lookout. Upon arrival, officers were advised that one male had been pronounced deceased and that a second male, 27-year-old Neilson Meekis from Deer Lake had been injured. The deceased is Joey Crow a 27-year-old male from Deer Lake. On July 15th as a result of further investigation, 26-year-old Jason D. Miller from Deer Lake has been charged with Second Degree Murder contrary to the Criminal Code in relation to Joey Crow's death. He is to appear in Kenora court today. The investigation is continuing.

Stolen Vehicle Located

July 19 10

Thursday, Dryden Police noticed a vehicle and its occupants in the Tim Horton's parking lot, acting suspicious. After further investigation it was found to be stolen. The 43 year old driver of Selkirk, Manitoba has been charged and arrested.

Duke Street Overpass Closed

July 19 10

The Duke Street Overpass is now closed in Dryden until October 15th. The overpass is being completly reconstructed. Motorists are asked to use the King Street Underpass and the Sandy Beach Road detour. Heavier loads can be transported through Gordon Road. The City is asking residents for patience and understanding during the construction.

Ignace Tax Raise

July 19 10

Ignace City Council has passed the 2010 budget which includes a 2% tax increase. Reserves were used to balance the books and council said they were in a financial bind with sewage plant repairs, back taxes and the construction of the new recreation center.

Changes to Mining Act

July 19 10

Northern Ontario's politics is undergoing great change with the modernization of the Mining Act and four other legislative pieces. The Minister of Northern Development, Mines and Forestry and the Minister of Natural Resources offered a timeline on the implementation of the new North, saying the plans will fall into place between fall 2010 and 2013. Specifically of interest to Northwestern Ontario is the increase of the Northern Highways budget to $773 million this year and further announcements in the next two weeks.

Tractor Trailer Unit Fire

July 16 10

Thursday night, Wabigoon Fire received a 911 dispatch indicating a Tractor Trailer Unit on fire just east of Wabigoon at the intersection of Muski Merk Road. Wabigoon Fire responded with three units and 10 fire fighters. On arrival the Tractor unit was fully engulfed in flame. The drivers were successful in separating the tractor from the trailer but were only able to separate the units by a few feet. Wabigoon units dumped over 6000 gallons of water to extinguish the blaze. The tractor unit was a total loss, the trailer was saved and sustained no damage. Highway 17 was closed for about one hour and then opened to one lane. The cause of the fire originated as the result of a tire blow out which was heard through Wabigoon prior to the 911 call.

One New Fire

One new fire was reported in our region Thursday. The fire hazard remains low to moderate for Northwestern Ontario. Crews and support staff have returned from Manitoba and are now back at their home bases after a successful deployment to northern Manitoba. All Ontario forest fire resources, staff and aircraft are now back at home. Thirteen fires are being monitored in Northwestern Ontario. Missing Man Found

July 16 10

89 year old Michael Marcyniuk who has been missing since July 14th was located safe and sound near Falcon Lake, Manitoba. The OPP credits an alert Ignace resident who called police after he noticed Mr. Marcyniuk's car broken down on the side of the highway. The Ignace resident heard the story on a local radio station as he travelled into Manitoba and recognized Marcyniuk's car.

Fatal Motor Vehicle Collision

July 16 10

On Thursday at approximately 12:50 pm a motor vehicle collision occurred on Highway 17 in Hodgson Township, 2 km west of the Highway 622 and Highway 17 junction. A west-bound passenger vehicle and an east-bound pickup truck collided on the highway and ended up striking a rock cut on the south side of the highway. The driver of the pickup truck suffered non life-threatening injuries and was treated at the Dryden Regional Hospital. The female driver of the passenger vehicle was a 45 year old female from Mississauga who died as a result of the collision. Members of the Dryden and Ignace OPP detachments responded to the collision along with fire and ambulance emergency services from Ignace. Highway 17 was closed as a result of the collision. The highway was opened to one lane of traffic at 6:00 pm and then completely opened at 8:55 pm. Police are still investigating the collision.

Head Cheese Contamination

The Northwestern Health Unit wishes to advise the public not to consume Freybes brand head cheese due to possible Salmonella contamination. The product has been distributed to delis in the Kenora area and sold to customers. If you have purchased this product up to July 14th, please contact your local Public Health Inspector. Symptoms of salmonella include nausea, fever, abdominal cramps, diarrhea, and chills.

Boil Water Advisory in Hudson

The Northwestern Health Unit has determined that the safe of the drinking water cannot be guaranteed in the community of Hudson. Until the safety of the water supply can be assured, all water from the community of Hudson's Water Distribution System should be boiled for at least 1 minute if used for human consumption. This advisory will remain in effect until further notice.

Missing Man in Sioux Lookout

July 15 10

Wednesday, Michael Marcyniuk, 89 years old, left his home in Sioux Lookout at approximately 9:30am. Mr. Marcyniuk was on his way to Dryden to go shopping in his white 1994 four door Oldsmobile '88' with Ontario licence plate APLA-172. Mr. Marcyniuk was expected back at around noon, but has not been seen since. He's described as being 6’ tall, 180 lbs and was last seen wearing grey dress pants, a tan jacket and black rimed eye glasses. He's reported to have several health problems and may have signs of dementia. Anyone with information is encouraged to call CrimeStoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS.

Highway 17 Rehabilitation

July 15 10

Drivers will experience a better, safer drive with the rehabilitation of Highway 17 near Kenora. With the support of Ontario's Northern Highways Program, two five-kilometer sections of the highway leading into the city from the Kenora By-Pass are being rehabilitated. Improvements are being made to grading, drainage, and pavement. This work is creating about 15 jobs and is scheduled for completion this autumn. Investing in highway infrastructure is an important part of the Open Ontario plan to create jobs and economic opportunities in Northern Ontario.

Ultimate Fishing Town

Dryden has been nominated to win the "Ultimate Fishing Town" contest on the World Fishing Network. A $25,000 community donation to be used towards fishing-related initiatives benefiting local anglers in Dryden is up for grabs. A half-hour show produced by WFN featuring the winning town with the show airing on WFN and www.wfn.tv is also part of the grand prize package. There was one new fire reported in the Sioux Lookout District Wednesday. Sioux Lookout Fire Number 62 is classed as under control at 1.4 hectares in size. Dryden Male Charged

July 15 10

Members of the Ontario Provincial Police Child Sexual Exploitation Section, E-Crime Section and Dryden OPP Detachment have arrested and charged a Dryden man following an on-line undercover child pornography investigation. Wednesday, police executed a search warrant at a Dryden residence. As a result of this investigation, two computers and one external hard drive were seized that contain images of child sexual abuse. Police arrested Russell Armstrong, 42 years of age of Dryden. He's charged with three counts of Possession of Child Pornography, two counts of Making Available Child Pornography and one count of Accessing Child Pornography. The investigation is continuing.

Two New Fires Confirmed

Two new fires were confirmed yesterday in our region. Red Lake Fire 41 is burning in slash fuels at approximately 1.5 hectares in size. Air attack and ground support are committed to this fire with no problems are anticipated at this time. Sioux Lookout Fire 61 also has air attack and ground support committed. The fire is 0.4 hectares in size. Severe weather warnings are in effect for much of northwestern Ontario this evening. Surgeon Leaving

The Dryden Regional Health Centre is losing Dr. Peter Dawes at the end of September. Dr. Dawes will be accepting a position with the Prince County Hospital in Summerside, Prince Edward Island. The Hospital has started the recruitment of a full-time general surgeon and is in the process of arranging locum coverage to minimize the impact on local residents needing service.

Fatal Motor Vehicle Collision

Nipigon and Schreiber Ontario Provincial Police continue to investigate a motor vehicle collision that occurred late in the afternoon on Sunday on Hwy 17, Cavers Hill in the Township of Yesno. The driver of a motorcycle travelling west bound lost control causing the vehicle to leave the highway. The 57 year old male driver, Richard Harbin of Auburn, Michigan died at the scene of the collision. The 56 year old female passenger, also of Auburn Michigan, was transported to Thunder Bay Regional Health Science Centre for her injuries.

Attempted Murder Charges

Sunday at approximately 7:12pm members of the Nishnawbe Aski Police Service were called to the nursing station in Deer Lake north of Sioux Lookout. Upon arrival, officers were advised that one male had been pronounced deceased and that a second male from Deer Lake had been injured. The OPP North West Region Crime Unit, under the direction of the OPP Criminal Investigation Branch was called in to assist in this investigation. The deceased is Joey Crowe, a 27-year-old male from Deer Lake. The death is currently under investigation. Foul play is suspected. A 26 year old male is currently in custody. He has been charged with Attempted Murder and will appeared in Kenora court Monday.

Be Water Safe

Following several drownings across the province in recent weeks, the Canadian Red Cross is urging parents to talk with their teens about water safety. An average of 400 Canadians drown each year. A Red Cross research report examining 10 years of drowning statistics showed that young children ages 1 to 4 and men ages 15 to 44 are at greatest risk of drowning. Shoplifting Charges

Dryden Police were called to a local grocery store Friday in regard to a shoplifter. A 50 year old female from Eagle Lake had been observed placing some items in her purse while shopping and later failed to pay for them at the till. After being approached, the woman assaulted the employee twice, once while police were in attendance. She has been charged with theft, assault with intent to resist arrest and failing to comply with the conditions of an undertaking.

Break and Enter Arrest

Early Sunday morning, a Florence Street resident called Dryden Police and advised them of a male trying to break into his home. Officers attended and arrested a 20 year old male from Eagle Lake. He was charged and appeared in court over the weekend.

Vandalism to Washroom

Sunday, Dryden Police were advised of some vandalism to the washroom in Pronger Park. Approximately $1000 damage was done to the toilet, toilet paper dispenser, hand towel dispenser and the garbage can. Police are asking help from the public in solving this act of mischief. Over the weekend, Dryden Police dealt with five liquor related incidents, and issued four infraction notices for traffic related offences.

OPP Reward Boaters

Members of the OPP marine unit were out on the weekend acknowledging children and adults for wearing life jackets. T- Shirts sporting a large yellow life jacket and statement "I got caught wearing my life jacket" were provided mainly to youth although some adults were also rewarded. OPP Marine unit suggest that all boaters consider a simple safety tip, while the motors running the jacket are on.

Driver Charged

On Saturday at 11:30 PM officers noted a vehicle being operated in an unsafe manner on Veterans Drive in Kenora. The vehicle was stopped and driver found to be impaired. A 66 year old male of Kenora was charged with impaired driving and will attend Kenora court to answer to the charge.

High Speed Hook-up

Remote areas in the Northwestern Ontario will be getting access to high speed internet. Federal and Provincial Government funding will pay over $8-million to accommodate those in remote areas. There are about 4,500 households that will benefit from the new high speed connection.

House Fire Under Investigation

Police and Dryden Fire are still investigating the cause of a large fire near Highway 601 and Marion's Trailer Park in Dryden. Oxdrift Fire, with mutual aid from Dryden, responded to the fire Saturday night. The large garage was completely engulfed in flames and burned to the ground. No one was injured. Highway 601 was closed for roughly 1-hour as crews battled the blaze.

New Fires Reported

There were two new fires reported in our region over the weekend. Both were small and posed no problems. Smoky conditions have been reported in our region as the result of smoke drifting from large fires in Saskatchewan. Ontario and India Sign Mineral Accord

The Government of Ontario and the Republic of India's Ministry of Mines have signed a Mineral Accord to help promote opportunities for mineral development and investment between the two jurisdictions. The agreement was signed during a visit led by the Honourable B.K Handique, India's Minister of Mines who is visiting Ontario and Quebec over the next few days. The agreement considers ways the two jurisdictions can work together on a broad range of mineral sector activities of mutual interest. This includes Geoscience development, mineral exploration, mine development and health and safety

Traffic Stop Drug Bust

On July 7th Dryden Police stopped a west bound mini-van on highway 17 for driving erratically. Upon the officer requesting documentation for the vechicle from the driver, it was learned that the vechicle had improper plates and no insurace. Further investigation found that the vechicle and occupant had several different kinds of illegal drugs in his possession along with $6000 in cash in clear plastic bags. A 56 year old man from Thunder Bay was charged with possession of a narcotic for the purpose of trafficking times 3, possession of property obtained by crime, use of plates not authorized for the vehicle, operating a motor vechile with no insurance, possession of a prohibited weapon and mischief under $5000 after the man broke a window at the Dryden Regional Hospital while in police custody

Two New Fires Thursday

There were two new lightning-caused fires reported in Nipigon District Thursday. Nipigon Fire 49, located approximately 130 kilometers northwest of Nakina, is classed as not under control at 1.5 hectares in size. Nipigon Fire Number 50, located about 115 kilometres northwest of Nakina is 0.1 hectares in size and classed as being observed. The fire hazard is low in the far north and moderate through most parts of the region with the exception of Thunder Bay and Nipigon Districts which are in a high hazard. Successful Blood Donor Clinic

The Canadian Blood Services Summer Blood Donor Clinic last week was very successful! With your support Canadian Blood Services collected 211 units of blood from the 246 donors that attended the two day clinic. These units will help up to 633 patients over the next few days for surgery, trauma, cancer and other treatments in Manitoba and northwestern Ontario hospitals.

One New Fire Reported

There was one new fire reported Wednesday in our region. Sioux Lookout Fire Number 59 is located about 120 kilometres north of Pickle Lake and is reported at 18.0 hectares in size. It is being monitored. Active fires remain in the region's far north but no problems are reported with them. Aerial reconnaissance shows some fires with no visible fire activity and some with several smoking areas. Crew training and safety audits continue in the region. Charges for Marijuana Trafficking

Tuesday, Sioux Lookout Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) executed a search warrant at a residence in Sioux Lookout. Two people were arrested and police seized a large quantity of marijuana with a street value of over $5,000.00. A 31 year old male from Sioux Lookout has been charged with Possession for the Purpose of Trafficking. Another 24 year old male from Sioux Lookout has also been charged with Possession for the Purpose of Trafficking. The police will continue to investigate all matters related to bootleggers and drug traffickers. New OPP Commissioner

Chris D. Lewis has been named Commissioner of the Ontario Provincial Police, effective August 1, 2010, replacing outgoing Commissioner Julian Fantino. Lewis joined the OPP in 1978 and was posted as a provincial constable in Kapuskasing. Over the past 32 years, he has been promoted to successively more demanding and high-profile positions within the Ontario Provincial Police.

Dangerous Roadways

The Kenora District of the MNR wishes to advise the public to use care and caution while traveling on resource access roads within the district. Many of these roadways may not receive regular maintenance or have been abandoned which may present and inherent danger to backcountry travelers. Recent rainfall has caused washouts and submerged road beds, which can be very dangerous for drivers. Reports of new or potential washouts should be reported to the MNR.

Dryden Police have two males in custody as a result of a break and enter which occurred at Community Living in Dryden early Monday. A 20 year old Dryden male and a 15 year old youth have been charged with break and enter and theft.

Ignace Water Plant Completed

Greg Rickford, MP for Kenora, was pleased to celebrate with the Township of Ignace Tuesday. Their water treatment plant project has been completed with funding in conjunction with the Canada-Ontario Infrastructure Program (COIP). Rickford worked on Ignace's behalf to obtain a one year extension and additional required funding that was the result of changes to drinking water regulations under the Ontario Potable Water Program. This enabled the Lake Water Supply System Construction Project to be completed. This major infrastructure project is very important to the people within this community and is a great example of federal, provincial and municipal governments all working together for the betterment of the people.

Break and Enter in Dryden

Dryden Police are investigating a break and enter which occurred early Monday. Community Living Dryden on Arthur Street was entered by smashing a window. Once inside a cell phone was stolen, along with keys for a van, which was returned prior to the Break and Enter being discovered. Two new fires were confirmed in our region yesterday. Red Lake District Fire Number 38 is located northwest of the community of Sandy Lake in the far northern portions of the Red Lake District. A second fire, also in the Red Lake District, is located west of the community of Keewaywin in the far north. There are nine fires being monitored in the northern portions of the Sioux Lookout and Nipigon Districts in addition to the two new fires being investigated in the Red Lake District and two active fires receiving suppression in the Nipigon District. Missing Man

Rainy River OPP officers are investigating a report of two males who fell off a boat in Rainy River over the weekend. One of the males was located and transported to hospital with non-life threatening injuries. The second male has not yet been located. Marine patrols and other OPP officers have been on scene. 15 Year Old Arrested

Dryden Police arrested a 15 year old Wednesday evening after a report was called in in regards to a damaged vehicle. The owner was sitting in the car when the youth came up and kicked the hood and then fled. After a search, the youth was located, held overnight and charged.

Dryden Police Officers were called to a local hotel Thursday morning regarding a disturbance in one of the rooms. Two individuals were arrested due to their level of intoxication. It was later learned that significant damage had been caused to the room and both were then charged.

Dryden Police are investigating an assault which took place at a local bar over the weekend. Police were called early Sunday morning and arrived to find a crowd of people on the street with an injured male. Two males were detained for investigative purposes and were later released. OPP Summer Students

OPP summer students start their employment today with Kenora Detachment. The detachment has hired 3 summer students who will be visible mainly in the down town core and harbour front area. The student's main duties include assisting the local detachment with the delivery of crime prevention programs such as Lock it or lose it, and highway safety programs. They will be spending some time with the city tourism office gaining information that will assist them with being ambassadors for the city. The OPP marine unit also has three summer students who will be assisting marine members during the busy summer season.

Impaired Drivers Charged

Kenora Police Officers removed another two impaired drivers from the streets during the weekend. On Sunday, officers noted a vehicle being operated at a high rate of speed on 9th Street N. The vehicle was stopped and driver found to be impaired. A 39 year old male of Kenora has been charged with impaired driving. On Monday at 1:00 AM officers stopped a vehicle on 2nd street; the drivers had been drinking and failed a roadside test. She was arrested and returned to detachment. An 18 year old female of Whitefish Bay has been charged with impaired driving as well as driving with no licence.

Greg Rickford is pleased to announce that following his introduction and debate on Motion 519 in the House of Commons on June 2nd, the International Joint Commission (IJC) announced earlier this week that they will examine and make recommendations regarding the bi-national management of the Lake of the Woods and Rainy River system. This review will complement government activities that foster trans-jurisdictional coordination and collaboration on science and management activities to enhance and restore water quality in the basin. As well it will assist in any future approaches to addressing new and emerging water quality issues and water management needs. A final report is expected to be released by the IJC the end of 2011.

Mike Richards Honored

25 Year old Mike Richards from Kenora will be recognized officially by the City of Kenora for his gold medal win in Men's Hockey at the 2010 Winter Olympics held in Vancouver. The City will hold a ceremony on site at the Kenora Recreation Centre that will present Mike with an official dedication from the City. On behalf of all of the Citizens of the City of Kenora, Mayor and Council extend their congratulations to Mike on his excellent achievements at the winter Olympics as well as in the 2009/2010 NHL Season. The public is welcome to attend the dedication which will be held on Friday, July 2nd at 12:00 noon outside the Kenora Recreation Centre.

Body Recovered

OPP Underwater Search and Recovery Unit members have located and recovered the body of Clayton Windigo, not far from where he was reported missing last week. The young man had been diving with friends on June 27th. He entered the water and failed to re-surface. The death investigation is being handled by Detachment personnel in conjunction with the Coroner office.

Missing Couple Found

A missing couple from Washington State was found on Tuesday evening after being stranded on a remote lake for 5 days. The couple both 67 years old was staying at a Red Lake Tourist Outfitter's Camp on Critchell Lake when on June 24th they encountered boat troubles and were stranded down stream from their cabin. The couple and their dog were found on the shoreline 5 days later in stable condition; however the wife was taken to the Red Lake Margaret Conchenour Memorial Hospital for observation

Fire Hazard Low

The fire hazard is low to moderate across the whole northwest portion of Ontario including the Far North which previously remained at a high hazard. There are now six active fires in the West Fire Region. Nipigon fire 41 and Sioux Lookout fires 49, 50, 52 are burning quietly and being monitored. However, high winds and wind gusts are in the forecast for the area, which may cause the fires to burn more. These fires are burning in remote and isolated areas. Compliance for Anglers

An enforcement blitz on four lakes near Sioux Lookout resulted in a 92 per cent compliance with only 11 charges and 17 warnings for anglers. Officers checked 354 anglers, laid 11 charges and issued 17 warnings for violations relating to fishing, liquor and the operation of small vessels. Charges included: possessing fish of a prohibited length, possessing live sport fish, possessing over-size bass, and operating a vessel with open alcohol. Most of the warnings issued to anglers were for failing to carry a fishing licence. Anglers are reminded that they must carry a valid fishing licence at all times while angling. Motor Vehicle Collision Details

On Tuesday just after 8 am, Ignace Fire Rescue, Ambulance, & O.P.P. were dispatched to a 2 vehicle collision on Highway 17 near Basket Lake Road. Dryden Ambulance, O.P.P., Dryden Fire Rescue, and Wabigoon Fire were then dispatched to assist. On arrival crews found a transport trailer unit rolled over with the tractor unit in the ditch and the trailer partially across one lane of the highway, with much of the unit's contents spilled onto the highway and in the ditch. The lone driver of the unit was removed by Ambulance Paramedics and then transported to the D.R.H.C. with injuries. The second vehicle involved in the near head on collision was a half ton truck that was cut in half on impact, the driver was rescued from the burning vehicle, and transported to D.R.H.C. with injuries. The passenger portion of the half ton landed in the ditch, and Fire Rescue crews assisted the Coroner with occupant removal. The Ontario Provincial Police are investigating this collision.

Shooter in Kenora

Yesterday afternoon OPP responded to the report of a man with a rifle on the roof of Valley View School in Kenora. Police secured area and notified residents in the immediate area to stay inside their homes. After a short while the suspect came down from the roof and was approached by police. The situation was concluded without incident with the suspect taking police to an area in the bush where 3 rifles were hidden. It was noted at this time the rifles were soft air guns manufactured to resemble commonly used assault rifles. The suspect is a 15 year old Kenora youth who was returned to the Kenora detachment. Investigation into the matter is continuing.

Funding for Red Lake Heritage Centre

The Red Lake Regional Heritage Centre is among three Northern Ontario attractions to benefit from an investment by the Federal Government as part of joint Federal and Provincial stimulus funding announced earlier this year. The Red Lake centre will receive $500,000 work done includes media production work, new equipment and programming and installation work. The new Red Lake experiences will feature an HD video about the historical impact the Norseman floatplane has had on this thriving Northern Ontario community. These new Northern Ontario attractions are projected to create $7.87 million dollars in direct benefits, and another $4.65 million dollars in value added benefits to the North. The project will account for a total of $12.52 million in economic stimulus, and generate 155 full-time jobs throughout Northern Ontario.

Lock it or Lose it!

Wednesday Kenora OPP officers responded to a report of two youth breaking into vehicles. Officers arrested two 16 year old Kenora males for the theft. While dealing with the youth it was determined that they were responsible for other thefts from vehicles that have been reported over the last few months. Officers are still investigating the incidents in order to identify which thefts these youth were responsible for. It should be noted that they targeted unlocked vehicles, especially when items of interest could be seen. Police are reminding the public locking your vehicle and keeping valuables out of sight will reduce the chances of you becoming a statistic.

Highway Closure at Borrups Corners

Dryden OPP advise motorists that Highway 17, east of Borrups Corner, between Ignace and Dryden, has been closed to traffic due to a serious collision. Stay tuned to Q104 for updates.

There were seven new fires reported in the West Fire Region over the weekend. They included two in the Nipigon District, one in the Red Lake District and four in the Sioux Lookout District. There was one new fire reported in the Nipigon District of the West Fire Region by the evening of June 26. Nipigon District Fire Number 42. Located about 20 kilometers east of Nipigon, the fire is classed as not under control at 0.5 hectares. It has one FireRanger crew committed and no problems are expected. Some outdoor fires such as campfires are allowed. However, daytime burning of brush or grass fires is not permitted. Those fires are to be started no sooner than two hours before sunset and put out no later than two hours after sunrise. Funding for Windsurfing Championships

Greg Rickford, the MP for Kenora, announced last week that the Government of Canada is investing $135,511 in the City of Dryden to assist with infrastructure costs associated with hosting the 2010 Canadian Masters Windsurfing Championships. The announcement made through FedNor's Northern Ontario Development Program complements measures in Canada's Economic Action Plan to help communities overcome the challenges brought on by the global economic downturn.

Stolen Fishing Gear

Last Monday, a guest of a Dryden hotel on his way to a tourist camp had all his fishing gear removed from his boat. The fishing rods and tackle are valued at $2500. Anyone with information is asked to contact CrimeStoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS.

Trespassing Charges

Early Tuesday morning, Dryden Police received several calls from concerned citizens in the Machin Ave area in regards to youths entering vehicles, trying to steal vehicles and running through backyards. A 17 year old male was arrested after a short foot chase and has been charged with trespassing.

Vehicle and Bike Accident

Wednesday, Dryden Police officers attended a motor vehicle accident on Van Horne between a car and a bicyclist. The elderly bicyclist was taken to hospital via ambulance with non life threatening injuries. The investigation is ongoing.

Arrested Youth

Wednesday, Dryden Police received a call from an Eagle Drive resident who just encountered a large male youth trying to push his way into her home to obtain alcohol. While police were enroute, a second call came in advising that the same male had just tried to break into a vehicle and assaulted the vehicle's owner. A 15 year old male was arrested at the scene and found to be on multiple probation orders. He has been charged with assault and breach of probation.

Investigation for Vandalism

Rainy River District OPP continue to investigate a series of vandalism occurrences from last week and now have more occurrences to investigate. Sometime during the weekend, culprits tore up a parking lot at the Lavallee Fire Monument by rapidly spinning the tires of a vehicle. The same crime occurred at the Emo Soccer Fields. Also over the weekend, three MTO road signs along the north end of Highway 613 were sprayed with graffiti. Anyone with information should call CrimeStoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS.

Assault Charges

Monday June 7th, Kenora OPP officers responded to a report of a domestic dispute on First St. South. Upon attending the scene the officer was confronted by a female wielding a knife resulting in shots being fired. The woman in the altercation has been charged with assault, assaulting Police and uttering threats. She will appear in Kenora court.

There have been no new fires reported in our region. Sioux Lookout Fire Number 42, a lightning-caused fire which started May 27 and was being monitored has now been declared out at 10 hectares in size. It was located about 75 kilometres northeast of Pickle Lake. Approved Budget

On June 23th the Board of Trustees of the Kenora Catholic District School Board approved a balanced operating budget for the 2010-11 school year, a set of recommendations related to its Five Year Capital Plan and a demonstrated commitment to ongoing and sustained academic excellence across the Board. In so doing, the Board of Trustees has established a high level of system financial stability, coupled with effectively managed system growth and a continued commitment to the provision of high quality Catholic education to the children entrusted to the care of the Board. The Kenora Catholic District School Board has set a course for the future built upon a strong foundation of financial and program stability. Accordingly, the Board will not be engaging in any amalgamation of schools either from within its own jurisdiction or with the Keewatin-Patricia District School Board.

The City of Kenora is considering its early summer advertising campaigns a success. The City has been involved in 2 separate campaigns both targeted at the Winnipeg and Southern Manitoba markets. The campaigns have run over a period from May 10 to June 27 with some overlap during the month of June. The Escape to Ontario Campaign was a regional campaign, lead by the City of Kenora, and primarily funded by the Ontario Tourism Marketing Partnership Cooperative. The Choose Your Adventure Campaign has received great results with over 2,140 unique visitors visiting the website during the course of the Campaign to date. Both campaigns included elements of Print advertising, Internet advertising and Radio ads. The City of Kenora's Tourism office will continue to monitor the results of both of these campaigns and summer visitor numbers.

There was one new fire confirmed in the Thunder Bay District yesterday and the Red Lake District was investigating the report of two possible new fires last night. Smokey conditions are being reported in our area as heavy smoke from large fires burning in northern Manitoba is carried by high winds from the west . This has prompted a number of general inquiry calls to the Forest Fire Reporting number. Municipal Cultural Planning Process

The City of Dryden and Dryden Development Corporation are now positioned to take another stride forward with the Municipal Cultural Planning process. Council's approval of a new composition for their Cultural Roundtable at the June 21st open meeting enables the recruitment and appointment of members from cultural communities that were not previously eligible, or faced barriers to full participation. The establishment of a diverse Cultural Roundtable, representative of the broader community, to guide the cultural planning process is crucial.

Fines for Hunting on Private Property

A Timmins man has been fined $3,000 for hunting on private property. He pleaded guilty to trespassing while hunting and shooting across a roadway. In addition to his fines, he is suspended from hunting for one year. His rifle, seized during the investigation, will be returned once the fines are paid. The ministry reminds hunters that it is illegal to shoot from, down or across a public road. Hunters must have permission to enter private land, even if the intent is just to cross the private land to reach public land. Stunt Driving Charges

Dryden OPP have charged two drivers driving 50 km/hr over the posted speed limits in the past week. A Dryden and Lac Seul male have been charged with stunt driving, received a 7 day suspension of their drivers licences and the vehicles they were operating were impounded for 7 days as well. The OPP reminds drivers that speeding is costly, so please drive responsibly. Speeding can cost you money, time and possibly your life.

Be Safe on Waterways

The OPP would like to remind the public that boating on local waterways is an enjoyable recreational activity, but to be aware of your surroundings while out on the water. Keep an eye out for other boaters, kayakers, canoeists, swimmers, wildlife, as well as water and weather conditions. New Canadian Citizens

Kenora MP, Greg Rickford, is pleased to announce that 23 people from Northwestern Ontario recently became new Canadian Citizens. A special citizenship ceremony was held on Thursday in Dryden at the Royal Canadian Legion. Twenty-three people, from all parts of Northwestern Ontario, representing nine different countries were sworn in as new Canadian citizens. The ceremony was presided over by Judge Degroot, Dryden Mayor Anne Krassilowsky, representatives from Greg Rickford's office and the Thunder Bay Citizenship and Immigration office were also present to participate in the ceremony. Each year, Canada welcomes more than 200,000 people from around the world-newcomers who become citizens, embrace our values of freedom, democracy, human rights and the rule of law, and who strengthen our feeling of shared identity. Canada has one of the highest naturalization rates in the world, with 85% of immigrants becoming citizens.

Board Meeting Highlights

Keewatin Patricia School Board Trustees met through videoconference on Monday for a special board meeting. Dean Carrie, Superintendent of Business, presented the 2010-2011 budget estimates. Highlights of the report include: Changes in accounting rules for the 2010-2011 school year, board compliance, use of accumulated surplus, revenues, expenses and recommendations. Second Fire Reported

A second fire was reported in our region Monday in the Thunder Bay District and was declared out yesterday. One new fire was reported in Nipigon District's far north yesterday. Training and safety audits are ongoing in our region as FireRangers continue with proficiency training and emergency personnel in the far north work towards recertification in standard training. This includes fire suppression basics, health, safety and wellness, teamwork, orientation to the Incident Command System, fire behaviour, hand tool use, heavy equipment operations, patrol and mop-up on firelines, values protection sprinkler equipment use, boat safety, bear training, fuel handling, aviation safety and radio operations. The recertification process is required annually.

Union Gas Changes

The Ontario Energy Board has approved changes to the natural gas commodity price that Union Gas Limited will charge its customers. Residential consumers who purchase natural gas directly from Union and use 2,600 cubic meters a year will pay up to $32 less per year. The change is due to a decrease in what Union forecasts it will have to pay for natural gas. The change is effective July 1st.

Torch Run Successful

Red Lake OPP would like to thank everyone who took part in the Annual Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics Ontario. Red Lake OPP raised over $2200, which is double the amount of last year. Their next fundraising event takes place in conjunction with the Norseman Festival at the end of July.

Machin Budget Passed

Machin Town Council has finally passed its 2010 budget and the average homeowner in Vermilion Bay will pay 4% more this year. The initial budget forecast called for an 8% increase, but managers were able to bring that figure down in the past few weeks.

No New Fires Saturday

June 21 10

There were no new fires reported in the West Fire Region Saturday. Friday was a busy afternoon for Fire fighters with a total of sixteen new fires. Fort Frances had eight fires, Dryden had six and Greenstone had two. A majority of the fires were a result of trees fallen over hydro lines and lightning. All fires were small in size and have been extinguished except Nipigon Fire 35 which is currently at 50 hectares. Forest fires in northern Manitoba have sparked a need for more resources. Our region will be sending five Type 1 Initial Attack Fire Crews, two 415 waterbombers, 1 Birddog Aircraft and one Air Attack Officer. Ontario also has personnel in Quebec and Northwest Territories, providing expertise and support in forest fire management.

National Aboriginal Day

Today, events will take place across Ontario and the rest of Canada in recognition of National Aboriginal Day. Established in 1996, National Aboriginal Day encourages Canadians to learn about the diverse cultures of First Nations, Inuit and Metis communities, highlighting the Aboriginal people, culture and accomplishments that have played an integral role in the history of this province. The rich and unique cultures of First Nations, Metis and Inuit, including traditional drumming and dancing ceremonies, powwows and traditional food, are being honoured in many of the Keewatin-Patricia District School Board’s schools throughout the month of June. Riverview School - Elder Phillip Gardner of Eagle Lake First Nation will visit Riverview School on Monday, June 21 at 9:00am for a cultural presentation for all students. He will be discussing the importance of Aboriginal Day and will play his hand drum for the students.

New Prospect School - Larry Beardy, Aboriginal special assignment teacher for the KPDSB, visited the school on June 17 as a part of their Cultural Day celebrations. He shared some Native teachings with the staff and students while they enjoyed bannock, wild rice and a variety of French inspired foods.

Golden Learning Centre - Students in grades 2-6 attended a powwow hosted by the Red Lake Indian Friendship Centre on Friday, June 18.

Ear Falls Public School - All staff and students of Ear Falls Public School will attend a powwow on Wabauskang First Nation on Monday, June 21.

Dryden Fire

June 21 10

Dryden 911 received calls for a power line down in back yards behind Parkdale Road just before 5 pm Thursday. Units were dispatched and on arrival found a power line down on a metal fence. Fire crews were assessing the outage area and had called Hydro One to attend when a Dingwall Parkway resident just arriving home informed Firefighters that their smoke alarm was sounding, and smoke was in their home. Dryden Fire upgraded the call to a structure fire and 5 units with 20 firefighters responded. Fire crews found a fire in the basement utility room in the floor area. A burst water line had extinguished the main fire, and flooded the basement floor. Fire crews then ventilated the smoke from the house for about 30 minutes, and assisted the owner with salvage of items from the basement. Hydro One worked for several hours during the storm to restore power to the neighbourhood homes. The cause of the fire is under investigation by the Dryden Fire Service, and the Electrical Safety Authority inspectors.

OSSLT Results

More results are in from the Ontario Secondary School Literacy Test (OSSLT). The assessment, written in April, and assesses the reading and writing skills students are expected to have acquired in all subjects up to the end of Grade 9. Successful completion of the OSSLT, or a related literacy course, is a requirement for students to receive their high school diplomas. Overall, the percentage of fully participating, first-time eligible students who were successful across the KPDSB was 69%, a decrease from 72% in 2009. The provincial pass rate was 84%, also showing a slight decrease from 85% in 2009. For the third year in a row, KPDSB students enrolled in the academic English course were on par with the provincial average at a pass rate of 95% for 2010.

HST Exemption for First Nations

Ontario will continue to provide a provincial exemption for First Nations under the Harmonized Sales Tax. This exemption has been in place in Ontario for 30 years under the Retail Sales Tax. Effective September 1st, Status Indians will be exempt from paying the provincial portion of the HST on eligible purchases off-reserve. Under the Harmonized Sales Tax, purchases by Status Indians are exempt when purchased on, or delivered to, a reserve by a vendor or its agent. Ontario's treatment will extend this exemption to eligible goods and select services purchased off-reserve. This is the same system that exists under the Retail Sales Tax.

Illegal Hunting and Fishing Licence

An Iowa man has been fined a total of $10,000 for illegally obtaining Ontario hunting and fishing licences and for illegal hunting. He pleaded guilty to having a void Ontario Outdoors Card, making false statements on the application and hunting illegally. The Ministry reminds the public to obtain an Ontario resident hunting and fishing licence, your primary residence must be in Ontario, and you must have lived in Ontario for six consecutive months during the previous 12 months. Highway Rehabilitation

The rehabilitation of Highways 125 and 105 will improve road safety for residents and industry in the Red Lake area. Drainage improvements and pavement resurfacing will be undertaken over 30 kilometres on the two highways; on Highway 105 south of Red Lake southerly, and the entire length of Highway 125. Work on this project will begin imminently and conclude later this year. This initiative is part of the Open Ontario plan, which will bring economic growth and jobs to Northern Ontario.

Thunder Bay Breast MRI's

Patients at the Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre and scientists Thunder Bay Regional Research Institute are now among a select few in Ontario who will have access to world-class Breast MRI technology. The partnership is an ideal opportunity to bring the new breast MRI to Northwestern Ontario. Cocaine and Marijuana Seized

On Friday, Sioux Lookout OPP Detachment conducted a traffic stop on Highway 72. As a result of an investigation four males and one female were arrested for possession of a controlled substance for the purpose of trafficking. Officers seized Cocaine and Cannabis Resin. Five individuals have been charged with possession for the purpose of trafficking Cocaine and Marijuana. The OPP investigates all matters related to bootleggers and drug traffickers. Human Remains

The OPP Kenora Detachment and members of the OPP Missing Persons Unidentified Bodies Unit are seeking the public’s assistance to help identify human remains found one year ago in the city of Kenora. The body was discovered in a small tent located in a wooded area near Miller Rapids on June 17, 2009. Investigation has revealed that the deceased was at that site for no longer than one week before her body was discovered. OPP investigators believe that foul play was not a factor in her death.

Female Arrested

Dryden Police were called to the area of Colonization and Parkdale last evening just after 9pm in regard to an unwanted individual. Shortly after, a 911 call was received about the same individual jumping onto a vehicle and causing extensive damage. An intoxicated female youth was arrested and has been charged with minor consuming, breach probation, resisting arrest and mischief over $5000.

Impaired Driver

Police arrested a 48 year old man from Dryden last evening after receiving a complaint that he had been drinking and was operating a taxi. He was stopped on Government St. and subsequently arrested. He has been charged with impaired driving.

Possible Fraud

Dryden Police received a complaint yesterday of possible fraud. A local resident contacted police and indicated she had purchased a ticket, which she now suspects was not legitimate. It was sold to her for $5 by an organization called "Bikes for Tykes". Investigation has revealed that although tickets appear to be real and display the logos of a number of sponsors, they are in fact fraudulent. The Dryden Police would like to speak with anyone who may have information regarding the individuals selling these tickets in Dryden last week.

One New Fire Reported

One new fire was reported in our region yesterday. Sioux Lookout Fire Number 48 was a smouldering fire at 0.2 hectares in size. A FireRanger crew has been dispatched to this fire. One new fire was reported on the evening of June 15 in the Sioux Lookout Northern District. The Community Fire Officer and the local fire department took action on Sioux Lookout Fire 47 and it is now out. Red Lake District has declared Red Lake Fire Number 32 out. One managed fire is still active in Quetico Provincial Park, two other fires that were being monitored in the park have been declared out. Thunder Bay and Nipigon District continue to monitor one fire each. The forest fire hazard is low to moderate across most portions of the region except for the Nipigon and Sioux Lookout Districts which are in a high fire hazard.

Lotto Max Ticket in Kenora

It wasn't the big prize, but when 12 winning tickets for the $1 million extra prizes were declared after Friday's massive Lotto Max drawing, one of the them came from Kenora. Lottery officials said Tuesday the winning ticket holder is expected in Toronto later this week to claim the prize.

Special Education Overhaul

Board office staff will be moving to the schools as part of the overhaul in special education at the Keewatin-Patricia District School Board. In order to free the teacher from dealing with disruptions, so they can focus on lessons, the board will be moving supports from Norman to their individual schools. They will also be assessing unique needs of sites in order to deal more effectively with issues. With the changes, the school board is hoping to provide better services for children at risk, as well as offer a better environment for learning. In the end, they hope more students will stay in school and be more likely to graduate. This will mean dealing more effectively with the root causes of disruptions.

Literacy Test Results

The Grade 10 Literacy test results have been released and the Keewatin-Patricia District School Board is pleased. 91% of students at Ignace School who wrote the test were successful, while 79% of Red Lake High students were successful. The number at Dryden High School was 74%, while Sioux Lookout posted a 44% success rate. The Provincial average was 84%.

Fines for Illegal Hunting

Two Michigan men have been fined a total of $11,300 and are banned from hunting in Ontario for a number of hunting offences. One man was convicted of careless hunting, night hunting and having a loaded firearm in a vehicle. He was fined $8,300 and had his hunting licence suspended for six years. The other man was convicted of night hunting, was fined $3,000 and had his hunting licence suspended for three years. Fines for Illegal Fishing Limits

Two anglers have been fined a total of $3,750 for having too many walleye in their possession. A man from Kenora and a woman from Winnipeg pleaded guilty to having 15 walleye over the legal limit. The ministry reminds anglers that it is illegal to catch and keep large quantities of fish. An individual may not have more fish than the possession limit of that species. Possession includes storing fish at home, at other locations or in freezers, as well as transporting them, holding them in live wells or having eaten them as part of a day's meal. Vandalism Investigation

The OPP are investigating a criminial incident which occured on June 4th in Pickle Lake. During the early morning hours, unknown persons set fire to the Pickle Lake Community Hall on Koval Street. Speeding and Drug Charges

Thursday, Dryden OPP officers were conducting traffic enforcement on Highway 17. An officer observed a blue Jeep travelling east at a high rate of speed and subsequently stopped it. After some investigation, police located a small amount of marijuana with paraphernalia. The 19 year old driver and two passenger have been charged with possession of a controlled substance. They will appear in court to answer to the charge.

Highway 502 Open

Highway #502 is now open to one lane. MTO officials are on site working to repair the highway as a result of water damage. Police are reminding motorists to use caution and slow down to allow for construction crews to continue their work.

Miller Paving Awarded Contract

The Provincial Government has awarded a contract to Miller Paving for highway upgrades in the Atikokan area. The $7.5 million contract will be used on upgrades to Highway #11 and #622. Work includes resurfacing, culvert replacements and guard rail replacements along a 30-kilometre stretch of the 2 highways.

Bridge Jumper Identified

OPP have released the name of a man who jumped off a bridge in Sioux Narrows on Sunday and died. 22-year-old Gerald Jonasson of Edinburgh, North Dakota jumped off the bridge on Highway 71. OPP haven't released any other details, other than that his death was accidental.

HST Rebates

Revenue Canada will be mailing H-S-T rebates to 6.6 million Ontario residents this week. It's to help with the 13% harmonized sales tax that takes effect on July 1st. Residents are advised the rebates are a one-time payment, while the tax is permanent.

Cottage Fire

Thursday night, a cottage was destroyed following a fire on Canyon Lake, about 35-kilometres north of Vermilion Bay. Officials say an American couple left their cabin to go fishing and they returned to witness the home completely engulfed in flames. Fire crews worked hard, fighting against downed power lines as well as limited access to the property. The cause is under investigation.

Celebrity Golf Classic

Thursday, Northwestern Ontario's hockey celebrities took part in the Freedom 55 Financial Thunder Bay Hockey Celebrity Golf Classic in support of cancer care in our region. Funds raised support the Northern Cancer Fund of the Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Foundation. The celebrity roster included Mark and Jordan Staal, Hayley Irwin, Tom Pyatt, and many others. Vigil in Kenora

There was a call for peace in Kenora Wednesday night. More than 80 people gathered on First Street South to light candles where 39-year-old Helen Proulx was shot and injured by a police officer Monday evening. From youth to elders, the crowd gathered to offer prayer and support to Proulx, who is recovering in a Winnipeg hospital.

Parking Limit to Remain in Kenora

The two-hour time limit on downtown parking meters will remain in place for the time being while council considers ways to accommodate businesses and customers who require more time. The matter is also being referred to Harbourtown Centre committee for further discussion and recommendations. Councillors and staff reviewed options during discussion at the finance and administration committee meeting, June 7. They noted the new two hour parking limits after which the vehicle must be moved has only been in place for a couple of month and a longer trial period is required to determine the pros and cons.

One New Fire Reported

There was one new fire reported in our region yesterday. Kenora District Fire Number 31 is a 0.1 hectare fire located just north of the community of Perrault Falls burning in grass adjacent to Highway 105. Red Lake District reports that Red Lake Fire Number 26 has been declared Out. This fire, located about 110 kilometres east of Red Lake started on May 18 and required aggressive air and ground attack and an Incident Management Team to contain. Rain continues to be the main theme of the weather forecasts and the forest fire hazard is low across the region.

Drinking and Driving Charge

Tuesday, officers received a complaint of a male driving his vehicle while intoxicated. An officer located the vehicle on Front Street in Keewatin and spoke with the driver who had been drinking. The driver failed the roadside screening device and was returned to Kenora detachment. A 71 year old male from Kenora has been charged with impaired driving. He will attend Kenora court to answer to the charge.

Drug Bust

On May 31st officers from the Organized Crime Enforcement Bureau, Drug Enforcement unit in Kenora conducted a search warrant at a Mascott Ave. residence. Officers seized in excess of 1100 grams of Marihuana, 2 grams of cocaine and $7000.00 in cash. The value of property seized exceeds $29,000.00. A 33 and 31 year old, both of Kenora have been charged with possession for the purpose of trafficking and possession of property obtained by crime.

Woman Shot Recovering

A woman shot by police in Kenora Monday evening is said to have stabilized in a Winnipeg hospital. She was shot twice in the area of First Street South by a lone female officer when she allegedly lunged at the OPP officer with a knife. Family members have reported she was hit in the arm and the side, shattering her pelvis. The province's Special Investigations Unit is currently probing the incident and spent much of Tuesday interviewing witnesses after collecting forensic evidence overnight to be transported back to Toronto for analysis. The team of four investigators and three forensic investigators arrived in Kenora around 3 a.m. Tuesday morning. While the team said it will leave the community this evening, it is expected to return for further investigation on the weekend.

Evergreen School Plea

Evergreen School parents made a plea to Keewatin-Patricia District School Board trustees Tuesday night, as they fought to save their building from closure. As part of their recommendations to trustees, the Kenora area review panel suggested Evergreen be closed and a new expanded facility be built at the Valleyview site. The panel was created last fall in order to help reduce operating costs for five elementary schools in the city. Trustees aren't likely to vote on the findings of the review committee until fall.

Special Education Policy Changes

Teachers will be getting more support in the classroom and spend less time dealing with behavioural issues. This was the aim of the Keewatin-Patricia District School Board's overhaul of their special education policy passed Tuesday night. In presenting the changes, assistant to the director of education Sean Monteith, acknowledged the strain on teachers as they try to meet the broad range of needs in their classrooms. The board will employ 25.5 special education resource teachers at the elementary level and 12.67 at the second level. In addition there will be five special assignment teachers for special education in the elementary grades and 82 educational assistants at the elementary levels and 34.3 at secondary levels.

MNR Road Check

A road check conducted by Ministry of Natural Resources conservation officers near Fort Frances found that 95 per cent of anglers stopped were in compliance with the law. During the road check on May 28, 2010, officers stopped 500 vehicles on Highway 11, east of Fort Frances, and sent 172 to a check station for inspection. Most were non-residents. Five charges were laid and 15 warnings issued for offences under the Fish and Wildlife Conservation Act and Ontario fishing regulations. Conservation officers conduct routine checks to ensure that anglers and hunters are obeying a variety of resource laws. Shots Fired in Kenora

On Monday at approximately 8:30pm a Kenora OPP officer responded to a report of a domestic incident on First St. South in Kenora. Upon attending the scene the officer was confronted by a female wielding a knife outside the apartment block resulting in shots being fired. Both on and off duty OPP officers provided first aid to the injured female at scene, and she was subsequently transported by ambulance to Lake of the Woods District Hospital in Kenora. The 39 year old female's medical condition is unknown at this time. The investigation is continuing. The Provinces Special Investigations Unit (SIU) has been notified and has invoked its mandate.

Two New Fires

There were two new fires recorded in our region yesterday. One fire in the Sioux Lookout District and another in the Nipigon District. Red Lake District reports ongoing progress on Red Lake Fire Number 32 which is now classed as Under Control at 4,417 hectares in size. There are currently seven fires being monitored for ecosystem renewal in the region in the districts of Fort Frances, Sioux Lookout, Thunder Bay and Nipigon. Outdoor fires such as campfires are allowed. They must be kept small, attended at all times and put dead out before leaving the site. Daytime burning of brush or grass fires is not permitted. These fires are to be started no sooner than two hours before sunset and put out no later than two hours after sunrise. For guidelines visit ontario.ca/firepreventio for details.

Blood Donor Clinic

Canadian Blood Services is asking Kenora and area residents to take the time to assist patients in need by donating blood at St. Thomas Aquinas High School Blood Donor Clinic. The clinic runs from 4:30 until 9:00 p.m. on Monday, July 5 and from 9:30 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. on Tuesday, July 6. By taking just an hour this summer, each donor can save up to three lives with one donation. With a successful clinic, Canadian Blood Services have the potential to help up to 600 patients when we reach their goal of 200 units (donations) of blood. Human Remains Found

Tuesday, Sioux Lookout OPP responded to a report of a body found in a wooded area of Sioux Lookout. Police attended the location and found human remains. A post mortem examination is scheduled for today. The identity is being withheld until next of kin is notified. Foul play is not suspected.

Breaching Probation

Dryden Police had two individuals in custody yesterday morning who will be making court appearances in Sioux Lookout as a result of breaching conditions of their release orders.

LOCK IT OR LOSE IT!

Dryden Police had three reports last weekend of vehicles that were entered with items taken. Residents are reminded to ensure their vehicles are locked when unattended and not to leave anything of value in them. Among the items stolen were in iPod, money and a packsack.

Various Charges

Over the course of last weekend, Dryden Police officers arrested two people for liquor related offences and issued eith offence notices for various traffic offences. A 21 year old male was also issued a 3 day suspension of his driver's license for consuming alcohol and driving. Officers conducted a RIDE program on Friday, issuing one warning for a traffic offence.

Repairs to Highway 11

The continuing repairs to Highway 11 east of Fort Frances are improving this essential link and creating jobs. With support from Ontario's Northern Highways Program, new concrete decking will be installed over 600 metres on the structure's West Low Level Deck. This work is creating more than 60 jobs and is scheduled for completion this fall. During construction, traffic at the bridge will be reduced to a single lane and controlled by lights. This is part of the Open Ontario plan to create jobs and opportunities in Northern Ontario.

No New Forest Fires

No new forest fires have been reported. Managed fires continue to be monitored in the districts of Fort Frances, Nipigon, Sioux Lookout and Thunder Bay. These fires are beneficial for renewing ecosystems and restoring habitats. One additional fire that was being monitored on an island on Eagle Lake in the Dryden District has been declared out. Stormy weather continues in the forecast with more rain and thunderstorms expected in the region through the week. Despite recent rainfall, the fire hazard is high across the north and low to moderate through the rest of the region. Outdoor fires are allowed under the Forest Fires Prevention Act of Ontario (FFPA), provided people follow the proper outdoor burning guidelines at ontario.ca/fireprevention.

No new fires were reported over the weekend. Crews continue to extinguish hot spots at Red Lake Fire 32 and no problems are anticipated. Motion Passed for NWO

Greg Rickford, MP for Kenora, is once again championing the interests of Northwestern Ontario. On June 2nd he brought forward a motion to the House of Commons that will ensure the long-term ecological and economic vitality of the Lake of the Woods region. The motion, M-519, gained unanimous support on the floor of the House, and was applauded by members of all parties.

1A Crisis Over

The 1A crisis designation at the Lake of the Woods District Hospital that has stood for two months was lifted at 4 p.m. on Friday. Standing since April 8, the status has allowed 12 patients in hospital alternate level of care beds to take first priority and be placed in local long-term care homes. As for long-term solutions, the hospital, both local long-term care homes, the North West Community Access Care Centre, and the North West Local Health Integration Network (LHIN) are meeting weekly but no details are yet available.

Parking Meter Limits Discussed

Kenora City council will review downtown parking meter time limits and options following discussion at Harbourtown Centre's monthly meeting Thursday. Council recently adopted a two-hour time limit at downtown parking meters after which the vehicles must be moved. The time limit was intended to keep traffic moving and responds to complaints about downtown workers "plugging" meters near their workplace rather than keeping the spots open for shoppers as intended. There was considerable support among committee members for a review of the time limit with various options suggested.

Jaws of Life Needed

Dryden 911 received calls from the O.P.P. reporting a person trapped in a vehicle 50 kms South on Hwy 502 Saturday. The Dryden Fire Service Rescue team & Oxdrift Fire Department were dispatched, with a Dryden Paramedic Ambulance unit to the scene. On arrival Fire teams conducted extrication on the van by removing the roof and door with Paramedics and Oxdrift First Responders conducting patient care on the injured lone male occupant. The occupant was extricated by Fire/Rescue members and transported to the DRHC with injuries within 40 minutes of emergency crews arriving on scene.

Break and Enter Charges

Friday, Kenora OPP officers responded to an alarm to a business on Ottawa Street in Keewatin. Suspects had gained entry by smashing the windows out of the front doors at which time they stole the cash register. Shortly after officers arrived they noticed two youth in the area of Superior Street, they were approached and subsequently arrested for the break in. Two Kenora males' ages 14 years and 16 years have been charged with Break Enter and theft.

Over the weekend thieves took advantage of two more vehicles that were not locked. One vehicle was on Ottawa St and had the face plate to the stereo stolen, a second vehicle on Railway Street had cash and jewellery stolen. The community is cautioned about the importance of locking your vehicles and keeping valuables out of sight.

Impaired Driver Charged

Saturday, Kenora OPP Officers were conducting Ride checks on Railway Street. A vehicle entered the check stop and officers noted that the driver had been drinking. The driver failed the roadside screening test, was arrested and returned to Kenora Detachment for tests. A 31 year old female from Grassy Narrows was charged with Impaired Driving and will attend Kenora court 21 July 2010 to answer to the charge.

No New Fires

For the fifth day in a row there have been no new forest fires reported in northwestern Ontario. This weather cycle allows for minimal drying of the forest fuels and is keeping the fire hazard low to moderate across the region. The eight monitored fires caused by lightening, continue to burn with no problems anticipated. These remote fires will help to rejuvenate those specific ecosystems without harm or discomfort to the public, property or values. Shoplifting Charges

Dryden Police arrested a Sioux Lookout woman on June 1st, after being called to Wal-Mart regarding a shoplifter. The 44 year old female was observed walking throughout the store putting items in her purse. When stopped outside the store, she was found to be in possession of $280 worth of merchandise and has been charged.

Another Shoplifter

Police returned to Wal-Mart Wednesday for a similiar occurence, at which time a 33 year old female was arrested for shoplifting. She was found to have approximately $35 worth of merchandise concealed in her clothing and will make her first court apperance on July 5th.

Liquor Offences

Dryden Police arrested three people yesterday for liquor related offences, laying charges of intoxication against two and the third was arrested to prevent breach of the peace as he was causing trouble at his residence. Officers laid nine charges yesterday in regard to Highway Traffic Act offences and charged two youths with failing to wear a bike helmet, after being warned by officers for the offence.

Forest Fire Hazard

The forest fire hazard is expected to drop to low as storm systems continue to bring rain and cloud cover throughout the West Fire Region. There have been no new fires reported so far since this weekend. The total number of active fires is 10 with a combined area of 7,428.3 hectares burned over. The 2010 total to date for fires and hectares in the West Fire Region is 239 fires for a burned area of 8,123.0 hectares. There isn't a restricted fire zone in our region and outdoor fires are allowed provided people follow the proper outdoor burning guidelines.

Access Awareness Week

With less than two years before Ontario mandates all private businesses to be physically accessible, Access Awareness Week has turned its attention to communication. This year's meeting was held at the Lake of the Woods District Hospital, which, despite being built on a hill, is working toward greater accessibility through hiring a sign consultant for more convenient and clear signage, hosting an onsite speech pathologist, staff in-services and providing "communikits" to aid inpatients experiencing challenges communicating with staff. The city set aside $30,000 in reserve for 2010 to address accessibility retrofit issues, which will bring municipal buildings up to standards by the end of the year.

Cancer Report Card

Yesterday, Regional Cancer Care Northwest is launching its first Report Card, highlighting the performance of regional cancer services over the past two years. The launch of the Report Card comes on the heels of the Cancer Quality Council of Ontario's Annual Report and CSQI (Cancer System Quality Index). RCC reported on the continued improvement of wait times for cancer radiation treatment across Ontario during 2009, despite a more than 10 per cent increase in the number of patients receiving treatment. The Northwest also continues to be a top performer with some of the best wait times. Regional Cancer Care Northwest aims to ensure that all patients receive equitable access to quality cancer care by offering world-class services in cancer prevention, early detection, diagnosis, treatment, and supportive/palliative care to the 235,000 residents of Northwestern Ontario. Currently, patients can receive care closer to home in one of 13 affiliated hospital sites across the region.

Money Raised for Cystic Fibrosis

Dozens of people in Kenora took part in Great Strides, Taking Steps to Cure Cystic Fibrosis walk and run from Anicinabe Park through downtown to the Lake of the Woods District Hospital. The effort raised $5,100 for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation to celebrate May as Cystic Fibrosis month.

Telephone Fraud

Dryden Police received a call from a local woman who advised them she had been contacted by a man requesting money. Jeremy Davis said he was calling on behalf of the woman's grandson, who needed $1900 to get himself out of a jail in Montreal. Fortunately, she contacted Police without giving out any person information or send any money. Police are still reminding the public to be vigilant in giving out personal information or sending money. Be sceptical and in situations like this, check to verify the actual location of family members.

Break and Enters in Ignace

There have been numerous Break and Enters occurring in Ignace and Ignace Police are investigating. Among the items missing as a result of these crimes include; a Hummingbird fish finder, a Husquavarna chainsaw, an orange metal 5 gallon boat gas can and a red plastic 5 gallon gas can. Constable Charged

An OPP officer from the North West Region has been charged following an investigation by the OPP Professional Standards Bureau. As a result the Constable has been charged with one count of uttering threats. In addition, 6 long guns and two hand guns were seized from his residence resulting in charges of Unauthorized Possession of Firearms. An 8 year member of the force, the Constable was off duty at the time of the incident and the seized firearms are not related to his duties as a police officer. He has been suspended from active duties.

Highway 11 Toll Booth Removed

The OPP has confirmed the toll booth on Highway 11 has been removed from the highway by Couchiching First Nation. The OPP would like to thank motorists for their patience during the period when traffic was delayed. Open lines of communication were maintained and a good working relashionship with the Chief and Council of Couchiching First Nations and liasion officers will continue.

Cause and Origin of House Fire

Investigators have finished looking into the cause and origin of the May 26th, structure fire on Harris Crescent in East Dryden. The investigation centered around electrical equipment and wiring on the main floor, several devices have been sent for testing. The structure loss is estimated by Insurance adjusters to be over $200,000.00 in this total loss fire, most of the new owners contents were in storage and not inside the structure at the time of the fire.

Fines for Cottage Construction

A Winnipeg resident has been fined a total of $9,000 and ordered to comply with the conditions of his work permit after attempting to construct a building illegally. The man was fined $1,000 for constructing a building without a work permit. He was also fined $4,000 for continuing construction after receiving a stop work order from the Ministry of Natural Resources and another $4,000 for failing to comply with the terms and conditions of a work permit. He was constructing a cottage on an island in Echo Bay on Lake of the Woods in an area where under a Restricted Area Order. The order is intended to ensure that new development on private lands will not damage water quality or lake trout habitat. A work permit is required to erect any building or structure within the restricted area. Fire Situation Update

There were no new fires reported in our region yesterday. Rain has dropped the hazard to low in most parts of the region and moderate in the eastern sectors including south of Thunder Bay and into the Nipigon District. Aerial patrols of Red Lake Fire 32, northeast of Pikangikum showed little to no visible smoke. Utilizing fire for ecosystem renewal is also part of the Aviation, Forest Fire and Emergency Services mandate and currently in our region there are eight fires being monitored for this purpose. These fires are being monitored but not suppressed to burn off aging, storm and insect damaged forests.

Fire Hazard Update

Northwestern Ontario firefighting resources are joining the support effort in the East Fire Region as the fire situation has eased in most parts. The fire hazard remains high in the Quetico Park, Thunder Bay south and Nipigon District and FireRangers and aviation resources remain on alert for any new fires in these areas. There were no new fires reported in our region Sunday.

Gold Mine in Dryden

Treasury Metals is hoping to open a gold mine just east of Dryden. The Junior Mineral Exploration company has high hopes and is focusing on exploration and development of its Goliath Gold Project. They are increasing the current mineral resources through ongoing drill programs. Currently conducting a more than 5000 meter diamond drill program, Treasury's aim is at testing shallow and deep targets in the main zone.

Manage Fires Responsibly

Rain in our region has eased the fire hazard but despite this, people setting outdoor fires are required to manage them safely. Under the Forest Fires Prevention Act of Ontario there is no day-burning without a permit. Brush and grass burning is allowed in the evening hours. The fire is to be set no sooner than two hours before sunset and be out no later than two hours after sunrise. FireSmart guidelines are available at ontario.ca/fireprevention.

Fines for Illegal Moose Hunting

Two hunters have been fined a total of $5,500 and one received two years of probation for illegal moose hunting. One hunter from Dryden, pleaded guilty to illegally hunting a cow and a bull moose, making a false statement to a conservation officer and shooting a moose from a power boat. He received $5,000 in fines and a two-year probation order, during which he is banned from hunting in Ontario. The other hunter, from Minnesota, was fined $500 for shooting a moose from a power boat. Fines for Hunting Offences

Five Ontario men received hefty fines totalling $12,000 and hunting suspensions after pleading guilty to various hunting offences in the Sioux Lookout area. Ministry of Natural Resources conservation officers were able to find and charge the offenders by using DNA evidence, as well as evidence located by the ministry's canine unit. Small Plane Crash

May 30 10

At approx 1pm on Friday May 28th officers from the Kenora OPP Detachment were called to the Kenora Airport after a small airplane ran off the runway. A Piper PA32 single engine had touched down and rain and strong winds forced it off the runway. Three people were on board including the pilot. None of the occupants were injured but the aircraft did receive damage as a result of the crash. The runway was also not damaged and the airport remains open to air traffic.

Electronic Waste Day This Saturday

Ontario Electronic Stewardship (OES) invites Kenora residents to drop off electronic waste Saturday at the City of Kenora Transfer Station from 9:00 until 5:00. Staff will be on site to collect used, broken or unwanted electronic equipment for reuse and recycling, leading to a greener, healthier environment. All electronic devices will be accepted. Summer Jobs Funding in Place for Kenora Students

With another school year coming to an end, summer job hunting has begun. As university and college students return, summer jobs are quickly disappearing. The Summer Jobs for Youth Program offered through LEAP, the Lake of the Woods Employment Action Project is in operation and for a second year, the provincial government has committed to pay wages to ensure young people will get summer jobs. Through funding from the Ministry of Children and Youth Services, each student is paid $10.25 for every hour they work minus deductions. Employers looking to hire students for the summer months can apply to the Summer Jobs for Youth program. Before being sent out into the workplace, students will go through a two-day paid workshop, which includes workplace safety, customer service, budgeting hints and employer/employee expectations. Employers and youth interested in this program can pick up applications until May 28 at the LEAP office, 25 Main Street South.

Local youth raise $12,000 for charity

Local youth participating in the World Vision 30-hour famine organized by Lakeside Baptist Church doubled the goal by raising $12,000 during the annual fundraiser placing them in the Top 10 in Canada. Last year the total raised was about $5,500. More than 120 people took part this year. Local businesses provided door prizes, food items and cash donations. Future projects for the church group include helping at Jubilee Church, along with neighbouring First Nations.

Dryden 911 Handles 8 Calls in 24 Hours

Dryden Fire/Rescue Service members responded to eight 911 calls in a 24 hour period including an accident at 3:30 Monday morning when a vehicle hit a moose on Highway 502. Two occupants were taken by Ambulance to the DRHC with injuries. Yesterday morning at 10:00, a collision took place at the corner of Duke Street and Whyte Avenue in Dryden. Several 911 calls reported a crash between a half ton truck, & a motorcycle. Dryden Police & Fire/Rescue Services were dispatched to assist Paramedics with the two injured drivers, who were transported to the DRHC with unknown injuries.

MNR Hunting Charges Laid

Two men from Moonbeam, Ontario have been fined a total of $2,900 for various offences including hunting at night. Each received a $1,200 fine and a four-year hunting license suspension. One of the two was also fined $500 for having a loaded firearm in a vehicle. A conservation officer seized a spotlight and their their guns at that time. They will be returned once the fines are paid. The crime took place November 9th last year in Morson Township, west of Fort Frances. The ministry reminds hunters that they may only hunt from half an hour before sunrise to half an hour after sunset, with some small game exceptions. Health Integration Extension

For a second time, the North West Local Health Integration Network has extended its crisis designation at the Lake of the Woods District Hospital. The designation allows priority for those occupying alternate level of care beds in hospital when beds in Kenora long-term care homes become available. Care Access Centre, Pinecrest and Birchwood Terrace have been meeting with the hospital on a weekly basis to review progress and attempt to place patients in more appropriate settings, including their homes. The crisis designation will expire on June 7.
