Fraud Prevention Month

As part of Fraud Prevention Month, the OPP is stressing to importance of everyone to be aware of identity fraud, credit card fraud and debit card fraud. Be careful who you share your personal information with. Keep your wallet or purse out of reach in public places and never provide personal information to unsolicited calls or emails. If someone comes to your door claiming they are working in your area and requests personal information refuse immediately, you are not obligated to act, purchase or sign. If you believe that someone has accessed your personal information for the purpose of identity theft, contact your local police or the Canadian Anti-Fraud Call Centre at 1-888-495-8501.

Kenora Video Launch

The City of Kenora and the Lake of the Woods Development Commission will officially launch their Kenora Community Video at the City of Kenora Council meeting on Monday, March 15 at 5:00 p.m. Mayor Len Compton will speak briefly about the development of the video before playing it to the audience for the official launch. The video can be pre-viewed at www.kenora.ca on the left hand side of the home page.

Funding for Two Feathers

Yesterday, Greg Rickford, MP for Kenora, was pleased to announce an additional $5 million investment to the Two Feathers Project. This investment brings the total Federal Government contribution to more than $13 million, setting the project and its partners on course to bring real economic development to Northwestern Ontario.

Dropping Cigarette Equals Fine

A Northwestern Ontario man has been fined $1,000 for dropping a lit cigarette in a wooded area.The public is reminded that it is illegal to drop and not extinguish a cigarette or other smoking material within 300 metres of a forest or woodland during the fire season. In some conditions, even the smallest spark can start a forest fire. More information is available at ontario.ca/fireprevention. KPDSB Meeting Highlights

KPDSB Trustees met at Ignace School on Tuesday for a regular board meeting. The fifth presentation of the 2009-2010 Seeds for the Future-Celebrating Our Stars initiative titled 'The Big Idea of Making a Difference' was received by Trustees. Sean Monteith, Superintendent of Education, and Richard Hodgkinson, Vice-Principal of Dryden High School, presented the School Climate report. The Tell Them From Me school climate survey was completed by 2,621 Grade 6 to Grade 12 students, in 20 KPDSB schools, between November 2009 and January 2010. Research shows that school climate reflects student achievement, engagement, participation, sense of advocacy, and goal setting. The KPDSB will begin to provide a full day of learning for four and five year olds at Pinewood School in Dryden and Evergreen School in Kenora as of September 2010. The program will be phased in over time, with full implementation to occur in all publicly funded schools in Ontario by the 2015-2016 school year. The next board meeting will be held April 13, 2010 at Sioux Narrows Public School.

1000th New Knee

A health care milestone for the Kenora-Rainy River District was reached on Tuesday, March 9th at Dryden Regional Health Centre. Dr. John Porter gave Gary Rumpel of Kenora a 'new knee'. Gary is the 1000th patient to receive a knee arthroplasty through a northwest regional tri-hospital joint replacement program. The orthopedic surgical program started in Dryden in 2002. Riverside Health Care Facilities in Fort Frances and Lake of the Woods Hospital in Kenora joined the program in 2005. Since that time, 569 knee replacements have been done in Dryden, 237 in Fort Frances and 194 in Kenora. There have also been 2559 arthroscopies, 98 major ligament repairs and 13,880 patients seen in consultation. The result has been service closer to home for thousands of Kenora-Rainy River District residents.

Victim in Fatal Collision Identified

Ontario Provincial Police have identified the victim of a fatal motor vehicle collision on Hwy 71 as 42 year old Brian Beacham of Sioux Narrows. Officers were called to a collision involving a tractor trailer unit and passenger van at 12:00AM yesterday. The collision occurred on highway 71 in the area of Calliper Lake approximately 6 kms south of Nestor Falls. The collision occurred when a northbound passenger van came into contact with a southbound tractor trailer unit in the southbound lane of highway 71. Members of Kenora Detachment and OPP Technical Traffic Collision Investigation unit were called to conduct the investigation. Sioux Narrows Nestor Falls fire and rescue were also on scene to assist officers. Hwy 71 was closed at the time of the collision to allow for the examination of the scene; it was reopened approximately 10 hours later after debris had been removed from the roadway. Investigation into the cause of the collision is ongoing.

Use Common Sense on Lakes

The warmer weather conditions are taking their toll on area lakes. The frozen bodies of water are becoming slushy in sections and other parts are open. OPP Constable Dave Cain says snowmobilers should use common sense. For trail conditions visit sunsettrailriders.ca.

FedNor NOT Changing

Tony Clement, Minister of Industry and Minister responsible for FedNor wants to be clear that FedNor will continue to operate at full capacity in Northern Ontario and will continue to deliver programs as it has for municipalities, businesses and entrepreneurs all across the region. FedNor has invested more than $200 million into Northern Ontario, not including the investments and jobs created through the first phase of our Economic Action Plan this past year.

Agreement Reached

The Keewatin-Patricia Elementary Teachers and the Keewatin-Patricia District School Board have concluded discussions regarding the terms and conditions of employment for teachers joining the Keewatin-Patricia District School Board from three former District School Authorities. Both parties are pleased with the outcome of the discussions and feel that the groundwork has been laid to provide a smooth transition for these individuals through to the next round of negotiations in 2012. No further details will be released pending ratification. The parties intend to ratify the settlements over the course of the next few weeks.

Erratic Driver Charged

Saturday Kenora OPP officers received a complaint of an erratic driver in the city of Kenora. The suspect vehicle was located and stopped on McClelland Ave. The driver was found to be in an intoxicated state and was arrested and returned to Kenora detachment for tests. A 23 year old Kenora male has been charged with impaired driving as well as operating a motor vehicle while prohibited.

Roadway Hazards

With the recent warmer weather melting snow and ice are causing hazards in some roadways in the area. Drivers are encouraged to be aware of large pools of water that if not seen may cause your vehicle to take an unexpected course. As well be mindful of pedestrians when driving through these seasonal obstacles.

Fatal Motor Vehicle Collision

Members of Kenora detachment are investigating a fatal motor vehicle collision on highway 71 in the area of Calliper Lake. At 12:00AM police were called to a collision involving a south bound tractor trailer unit and a north bound van. The vehicles came into contact in the south bound lane of the highway. The driver of the van was fatally injured as a result of the collision. Detachment members called in the OPP Technical Traffic Collision Investigation Unit to assist with the investigation. Highway 71 was closed at the time of the collision and has since been re-opened. Investigation is continuing into this collision.

Multiple Charges in Sioux Lookout

Sunday in Sioux Lookout, OPP officers charged a 24 year old driver from Manitoba with Impaired Operation of a Motor Vehicle, Driving over 80km/h and Possession of Marijuana. The driver had approximately on and a half times the legal limit of alcohol in his body at the time of the offence. He has been released from custody with a April Court date.

More Charges in Sioux Lookout

Sunday afternoon in Sioux Lookout, OPP officers responded to a single motor vehicle collision and charged a 41 year old male from Manitoba with Impaired Operation of a Motor Vehicle casing bodily harm, Driving over 80km/h resulting in an accident and Driving while suspended. The male had approximately three times the legal limit of alcohol in his body at the time of arrest. Two passengers were transported to the Sioux Lookout Hospital as a result of the collision. The OPP are continuing investigation into this incident.

Paperkings Fourth in Ontario

The Dryden Peewee AA Paperkings travelled to Thunder Bay on the weekend and captured their 5th championship this season by now winning the Norwest Peewee AA Championship on Sunday. The Paperkings went a perfect 6-0 and defeated the Westfort Rangers 5-4 Sunday afternoon in the Gold Medal. The Dryden Peewee AA Paperking are ranked 4th in Ontario and their record now improves to 58-5 for the year.

HST Webconference

Howard Hampton, the MPP for Kenora-Rainy River, and John Rafferty, the MP for Thunder Bay-Rainy River, will be teaming up March 12th, to host an online town-hall meeting to discuss the proposed Provincial/Federal Harmonized Sales Tax (HST). Over the past few months both Hampton and Rafferty have spent a great deal of time working to raise awareness of the proposed tax and its potential impact in Northwestern Ontario. The webcast, which will feature a full chat will take place March 12 at 4:00 p.m. CST, or 5:00 p.m. EST, at johnrafferty.ndp.ca.

Hospital Board Changes Structure

At the monthly meeting Thursday night, Lake of the Woods District Hospital Board chairman Debbie Baldwin proudly held a letter signed by Minister of Health Deb Matthews allowing the board to change its structure. The board has chosen a 13-member structure with nine corporately elected members and four ex-official members. At the suggestion of hospital president, the board will rotate those nine members on a three-per-year basis. To get the system on its feet, current members will stand for a one, two or three-year term. At the annual general meeting in June, the door will be open to the general public to purchase a membership with which they can vote in hospital board members.

Federal Budget Released

Last week, the Conservative government delivered the 2010 Federal Budget. Greg Rickford, MP for Kenora, is pleased with the policies that have been brought forward. Consistent with the priorities of Canadians, the budget outlines the second phase of Canada's Economic Action Plan, both introducing new stimulus measures to create and protect jobs and reaffirming earlier commitments. The 2010 Budget also looks ahead to ensure Canada's long-term economic growth.

Blood Donor Clinic

Canadian Blood Services is hosting a blood donor clinic at St. Thomas Aquinas High School on Tuesday, April 6th from 4:30 - 9:00 and Wednesday, April 7 from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. The Canadian Blood Services is hoping to reach their target of 188 units of blood with the potential to help up to 564 patients in Northwestern Ontario and Manitoba hospitals. School Survivors Support Program

The Grand Council Treaty #3 is undertaking a comprehensive initiative. The Residential School Survivors Support Program will have the capacity and flexibility to meet the diverse needs of a potentially large number of Former Indian Residential School students in various Treaty #3 locations. This program will support claimants and their families to ensure they have access to an appropriate level of emotional, spiritual and cultural support.

Impaired Drivers Arrested

Dryden Police arrested two impaired drivers this past weekend. Just shortly before midnight last Thursday. Officers were on patrol on Government Street behind a vehicle, which crossed the center line. Officers followed the vehicle, and noted that it was being driven in a somewhat erratic and subsequently stopped the driver. A 19 year old male from Dryden was charged with impaired driving as a result of this incident.

Impaired Driver in Snowbank

Last Friday, a Dryden male was operating a vehicle when he failed to negotiate a corner at Rourke and St. Charles and ended up in a snow bank. As a result of this incident, he also has been charged with impaired driving.

Mischiefs in Dryden

Police are still investigating a number of mischief incidents that occurred on the weekend. Two persons reported that the back windows of their vehicles has been broken and a Whyte Avenue business has a window broken by a ball bearing. Officers were able to discern where the suspect had stood on the snow bank across from the store and likely used a sling shot to launch the ball bearing. Although the vehicle owners were not positive, it felt that one of the windows was broken while the vehicle was parked on Earl Avenue and the other on Colonization.

Violent Offender in Dryden

In the interest of public safety, Dryden Police are issuing a warning that Edward Hamel has been released from the Regional Psychiatric Center where he served 3 years for 2 counts of uttering threats to cause death and harm to a police officers and a correctional officer. Hamel is now residing in Dryden and considered a violent offender who has a history of violent offences and poses a risk of significant harm to the community. He is Caucasian, 37 years old and 5'6" and about 200pds. The public is advised that the intent of releasing this information is to enable citizens to take suitable precautionary measure.

Council and Committee of the Whole Meeting Time Changes

The City of Dryden wants residents to know that Council new meeting times are now effective. The Committee of the Whole will meet at 7:00 p.m. Every Second Monday of each Month and Council will meet 7:00 p.m. Every Third Monday of each Month. When the day for a meeting is a public or civic holiday, the Committee of the Whole/Council shall meet on the Tuesday following. Meetings are held at City Hall, Council Chambers at 30 Van Horne Avenue.

Sustainable Travel to School and Work Project

Ontario is supporting the City of Dryden Sustainable Travel to School and Work project to promote the use of non-motorized transportation options like cycling or walking. Funding for this project will be received from the Ontario Transportation Demand Management Municipal Grant program. The City will launch an educational and promotional program that raises awareness of active transportation and promotes cycling safety. Initiatives include: Adding new signage to show connections along the trails and installing 40 bike racks. Adding information about urban trails to the school curriculum throughout the district. Conducting community challenges, trail tours, and cycling. And making rental bikes available through the Recreation Centre for both residents and visitors.

Ontario Good Roads Association 2010

City of Kenora delegates returned from the Ontario Good Roads Association 2010 Conference last week following a busy schedule of meetings with provincial cabinet minister and parliamentary assistants over the four-day event in Toronto. Mayor Len Compton noted the Kenora representatives made nine deputations to provincial government representatives, more than any other municipality attending the conference. Kenora is entitled to just 52.8 per cent of the funding entitlement; $2.1 million less annually than the city would get if it were eligible for the full allocation that smaller municipalities in the district with lower populations receive. The city is pursuing changes to restrictive provincial funding of snowmobile trails development and maintenance.

Growth Plan for Northern Ontario Pressure

Northwestern Ontario Municipal Association president Anne Krassilowsky recently met with Ministers to bring pressure from the region that the Proposed Growth Plan for Northern Ontario be a priority and that it be directed by Northerners. She reiterated the request for an increase to the Northern Communities Grants, looking to raise the long-standing rate of $235 by $75 per family.

Robbery in Kenora

Monday Kenora OPP officers responded to a complaint that a taxi driver had been robbed after dropping off a fare in the area of Sixth Ave. S in Kenora. Officers managed to locate the suspect in the area shortly after the incident, a search of the area was completed and the knife used by the suspect was located. The cab driver was not injured during the incident. A 24 year old male of Kenora has been charged with robbery, assault with a weapon and wearing a disguise while committing an indictable offence.

Aspenware Hurdle

Aspenware, a manufacturing plant that should create jobs in Dryden, up to 100 has another problem to solve before construction can begin. The company is waiting for provincial government funding approvals. Aspenware has applied for government loan guarantees and is still negotiating with First Nations in Northwestern Ontario for their fibre supply. The company, based in B.C. announced last Fall that it would build a manufacturing plant in Dryden to produce biodegradable, durable wooden cutlery.

Montague Update

The justices that heard former gunsmith Bruce Montague's appeal last week in Toronto have upheld his conviction on 26 firearm related charges and upheld his 18 month jail term. He was arrested with an unregistered firearm at a Dryden gun show in September 2004. He and his wife have been convicted of a combined nearly-30 firearm related charges and he is almost out of appeals. The judges ruled that Canadians do not have a constitutional right to bear arms and that possession of firearms is not something that is guaranteed under the Charter of Rights and Freedoms. Montague has indicated that he will take his case to the Supreme Court of Canada to appeal the ruling.

Ontario Teaching Awards

Nominations are now open for the OTIP Teaching Awards. The nominations are open to all teachers in Ontario's publicly funded schools, including public, Catholic, and francophone school boards, and anyone may nominate. The nominations are submitted online in one of three categories: elementary, seconday, and beginning teacher. A committee of classroom teachers from OTF's Affiliates reviews all nominations and develops a short list of up to 10 candidates per category for consideration by the final jury. The deadline for nominations must be done by April 12 and must be made electronically from the website teachingawards.ca.

Assault on Police

March 02 10

Saturday, Kenora Police officers responded to a fight on First Street South in Kenora. While investigating the incident officers were confronted by a male subject who felt the need to obstruct police from doing their jobs. The male became agitated and pulled a knife on police; he was disarmed and after attacking police with a broken bottle barricaded himself inside a room. Officers were able to talk the man out and place him under arrest without further incident. The 28 year old male has been charged with obstruct police, escape lawful custody, assault police and assault with a weapon.

Another Assault on Police

Sunday, Police responded to a call at a Matheson Street address in Kenora. Upon arrival they were advised of a man who was becoming aggressive and would not leave the residence. After being advised to leave the male became combative and needed to be physically controlled by officers. A 39 year old male of Kenora has been charged with three counts of assaulting police.

Assault Leads to Head Injuries

Police responded to an assault at a residence on Minto Avenue on Saturday morning. It was reported that a 24 year old Kenora man had fallen down the stairs and required medical attention. The man was taken to Lake of the Woods District Hospital and transferred to Health Sciences Centre in Winnipeg with head injuries. Officers are still investigation the circumstances around this incident.

Ontario Summer Jobs Program

Applications from employers under the 2010 Ontario Summer Jobs Service are now being accepted by the Ministry of Northern Development, Mines and Forestry. Employers are encouraged to hire students through a $2-per-hour incentive. Ontario's summer jobs programs and services are open to students aged 15 to 30 years who are planning to return to school this fall. This year, employers can complete and submit their applications online by visiting the ministry's website and following the instructions provided, or download the application form and deliver a completed, hardcopy by fax, mail, or in person to their nearest Ministry of Northern Development, Mines and Forestry office. Applications close April 30.

Stop Leads to Charges

February 19th, OPP were conducting highway enforcement in Wabigoon and stopped a west bound motor vehicle for a traffic violation. During the stop officers located a quantity of marijuana and drug paraphenalia. As a result, the 55 year old male driver from Dunnville, Ontario has been charged with possession of a controlled substance.

Truck Fire

March 02 10

Thursday, members of the OPP responded to a commercial motor vehicle on fire on Highway 17 20km west of Vermilion Bay. When OPP and Machin Fire personal came on the scene, the truck was completely engulfed in flame. The vehicle was completely destroyed in the fire and the trailer suffered minimal damage. No on was injured and no foul play is suspected. Highway 17 was closed for almost an hour while fire fighters worked to extinguish the fire.

Increased Fines to Reduce Dangerous Driving

Effective January 1st, the Ontario Government increased the fines for persistent dangerous driving offences. Including, failure to stop at a red light has been increased from $110 to $325. Failure to wear a seat belt and failure to ensure passengers under 16 are properly secured has been increased from $110 to $240. Careless driving and failure to remain at the scene of a collision has increased from $390 to $490 and failing to stop or slow down for emergency vehicles is now $490 and three demerit points. The OPP is committed to ensuring the safety of all motorists in Ontario. They would like to remind all drivers that highway safety starts with you.

Fabricated Report

Thanks to members of the public and further investigation by the Dryden Police Service, a male confessed to fabricating a false report on February 21st, of a theft and assault in the King Street Underpass. A 28 year old Dryden male was arrested on February 25th and charged with assault with a weapon, assault causing bodily harm and public mischief in relation to a domestic dispute. The male will appear in Sioux Lookout bail court this morning. The Dryden Police Service appreciates members of the public who come forward with information after hearing or reading press releases. It is with their help that Police have proven the truth in many of the alleged violent acts that have been reported occurring recently on our City Streets.

Mother and Two Children Arrested

March 01 10

Over the span of approximately 4 hours on Thursday and Friday, Sioux Lookout OPP arrested a mother and her two children. Thursday evening, investigation led Police to the arrest of a male for failing to comply with release conditions from previously being in custody. When the youth's mother came to pick up her son, it was learned that she to had been drinking and was also failing to comply with release conditions. The male youth and mother have been charged. Friday, Police arrested a female after she was seen stumbling in public. Further investigation revealed she was the sister of the male youth and daughter of the mother previously arrested and charged. She was also failing to comply with release conditions and has been charged.

Funding for Webequie First Nation

Greg Rickford, MP for Kenora, has announced that the Webequie First Nation has awarded the contract for its new 1.0 megawatt diesel generating station. The Government of Canada invested approximately $16.4 million in core capital funding for the facility to meet current and future electrical needs of Webequie First Nation. Mobilization of materials to the First Nation is expected to occur in 2010 using the winter road. Construction will commence in the spring of 2010. The new facility will have three generator machine bays, a waste storage and mechanical room and a main control room. The site for the facility is located near the airport and will include an access road, step-up transformers and bulk fuel storage tank facility. The Webequie First Nation is located on the northern peninsula of Eastwood Island on Winisk Lake, 540 kilometres north of the City of Thunder Bay, or 450 kilometres north of the Town of Sioux Lookout. The Government of Canada is investing in projects that provide lasting, sustainable benefits for First Nation communities.

Good Roads Association 2010 Conference

Kenora council delegates attending the Ontario Good Roads Association 2010 Conference took a long list of local issues to address at meetings with provincial cabinet ministers in Toronto earlier this week. The city's 39-page presentation addresses a broad range of topics including: forest industry issues; Ontario Municipal Partnership Fund calculation and allocation shortfall; infrastructure funding deficit on municipal roads, bridges, services and buildings; water quality, recycling costs, land ambulance funding, social housing/homeless shelter programs, municipal Homes for the Aged levy, snowmobile licensing, accessibility and training.

Race for Chief in Shoal Lake

Erwin Redsky narrowly won the race for chief on the island community of Shoal Lake 40 Wednesday. Redsky had served two terms from 2002 until 2006. It was only a two-vote margin over Frances Greene after all 218 ballots had been counted. Greene, who had previously served on council, was hoping to become the first woman in charge of the First Nation. Herb Green and incumbent chief Kelvin Redsky were also on the ballot for chief. There will be an entirely new council this term. Billy Joe Wahpay, Tom Anderson, Marcella Wood and Vernon Redsky will serve. Vernon Redsky has also been chief in the community. The First Nation has 554 band members listed, including 259 living on-reserve. It's located across Indian Bay from Shoal Lake 39, also referred to by its traditional name of Iskatewizaagegan.

iLevel Production

Kenora's iLevel plant is ramping up production. The move to five-day a week operations comes in anticipation of a strong American housing market, which is finally showing signs of recovery. After spending most of last year at reduced levels - hovering around three to 3.5 days of operation a week - management is finally hoping to restore some lost staff. This has also led to hope for recalls at Kenora Forest Products, which closed indefinitely last January. There were another 75 workers at the stud mill, in addition to related suppliers and woodland operators. Both companies have asked for a resolution to the impasse over wood rights in the Whiskey Jack Forest, in order to help stabilize their long-term viability. However, a solution has so far eluded negotiators.

23 Calls for Service on Tuesday

Tuesday, Sioux Lookout OPP responded to 23 calls for service. During the 24 hour period, police arrested 8 people and charged 7. Two are still wanted for arrest.

Resisting Arrest

Feb 26 10

Early morning Wednesday, Sioux Lookout OPP stopped to speak with a female hitchhiking on the side of the road. A male appeared and police attempted to arrest him after they learned he was previously released from police custody on conditions not to consume alcohol. A short pursuit led officers into a parking lot and the male became combative. Officers were able to control the man and arrest him. The 25 year old has been charged Resisting Arrest, Intent to Resist Arrest and 2 counts of Failing to Comply with an Undertaking.

Youth Shot with Air Soft Gun

Dryden Police are investigating an incident that took place yesterday on Casimir Avenue. A youth reported being shot with an air soft gun while walking home from school. Investigation has lead to the identification of a 16 year old youth with charged pending. No serious injury was reported as a result of this incident.

Shoplifting

Feb 26 10

Dryden Police arrested two local residents yesterday after a report of a shoplifting incident. The two youth were observed by store security failing to pay for several items that hey had concealed. The total value of the items by both was about $350. Both were charged with theft under $5000.

RIDE Program Leads to Arrest

Wednesday evening during a RIDE program, Dryden Police arrested a 20 year old male and charged him with being Impaired by a Drug and Possession of a Controlled Substance. He will make his first appearance in Dryden Court at the end of March.

Thefts from Vehicles

Kenora Police have received reports of theft from vehicles in the area of Kirkpatrick Avenue over the last few days. Suspects are entering unlocked vehicles and removing loose change and other items that have been left. Collision on Sweeney Road

Kenora Police were called to a collision involving a pick up truck and snow machine on Sweeney Road in Kenora yesterday. The operator of the snow machine crossed the roadway in front of the oncoming vehicle. The driver of the truck attempted to avoid a collision but slid off the roadway making contact with the back of the snow machine. Although there was no injury and minor damage to the snow machine. This incident could have result in a tragedy. Snow machine operators are reminded to stay alert - ensure you have a clear view and are certain there is no traffic before crossing roadways. They are also reminded the requirement to obey signage on trails including those that identify any sections closed.

Illegal Hunting Camp

Eight men have been fined a total of $3,100 for offenses related to an illegal camp on Crown land. Upon investigation, officers determined that a large metal structure and shed on Crown land had been in place for ten years. They found camping supplies on site. Officers confirmed that three members of the group had travelled the closed Werner Lake Road to access the site and two members of the group, using the site as their base, were fishing without licences. The group must remove the camp and all of their belongings by the end of June. The ministry reminds the public that Canadian residents may camp free of charge on Crown land for up to 21 days at one site, except where posted otherwise. Passport Clinic

Yesterday close to 100 people attended the second Passport Clinic held in Kenora by MP Greg Rickford, his staff, and volunteers. Greg was on site throughout the clinic, which was run from 2 until 7 pm at the Royal Canadian Legion. At the clinic, constituents were assisted with all aspects of their passport applications, including form completion, photocopying of relevant documents, passport photos, final application checks, submission to Passport Canada, and tracking the applications. The turnaround time on new applications is approximately four weeks, while it generally takes two weeks for renewals.

American Fined

Two Americans have been fined a total of $3,500 for illegal deer hunting. They were fined $1,500 and $1,000 with an additional fine of $500 each for making false statements to a Ministry of Natural Resources conservation officer. The men told officers that one of their harvested deer came from Wildlife Management Unit (WMU) 6. Upon investigation, officers determined that the deer was in fact harvested near Stewart Lake Road in WMU 5, which has no open season for white-tailed deer hunting for non-residents of Canada. The ministry reminds hunters that WMUs are regulated to help manage a number of wildlife populations. Hunters are responsible for knowing which WMU they are hunting in and obey the rules for that WMU. Local youth who face barriers to employment will get job-preparation training and work experience through the Government of Canada's support for a local employment project. Mr. Greg Rickford, Member of Parliament for Kenora, made the announcement on a visit to Sachigo Lake First Nation will receive $97,252 in federal Skills Link funding to support its Youth-Skills Link-Project, which will help 10 youth facing employment barriers develop life and job skills to ease their transition to work or return to school. Skills Link focuses on helping youth facing barriers to employment, such as single parents, Aboriginal youth, young persons with disabilities, recent immigrants, youth living in rural and remote areas, and youth who have dropped out of high school.

Canadian Monopoly Results

The shroud of secrecy laid over the Canadian Monopoly contest in the last week of voting will shadow the winning cities in mystery until June. The online voting has officially closed on the contest that could make Kenora one of two wildcard cities on the Canadian edition of the popular board game. The results were ghosted for the final week of the contest, which displayed Kenora in fifth place overall going into darkness. The results should be posted soon.

Volunteers Needed

Front line social service agencies are seeing more families and children among their ranks this winter. At the Minto Area Parent Child Resource Centre, this includes more than 100 families helped through services ranging from food vouchers to community kitchens. The centre's breakfast coupons alone help 133 children, and the budget for groceries has been steady at $2,500 to $3,000 a month. At the Fellowship Centre on Water Street, they've seen 100 different people through the doors since the beginning of January. On any given day, they'll serve about 55 meals and they'll offer shelter to between 10 and 12 people a night. Their funding is due to run out in April. Volunteers are needed, now more than ever.

Social housing advocates had some good news to share with Week of Action Against Poverty supporters during the official book launch of Homeless in Kenora: Voices from the Shelter, at HoJoe Coffee and Books Friday. Aamikkowiish Non-Profit Housing has received conditional approval of $2.89 million to construct or acquire seven transitional units and 10 permanent homes in Kenora. The grant was awarded by Ontario Aboriginal Housing Support Services Corporation through the First Nations Inuit Metis Urban Rural housing program. The Ontario government has allocated $60 million to Ontario Aboriginal Housing Services to provide affordable housing outside of the Greater Toronto Area. In a separate announcement, Kaabeshiwiin Non-Profit Housing Corporation in Red Lake was awarded $1.02 million for six units.

Funding for Young Entrepeneurs

New small businesses, run by young entrepreneurs, are up and running, creating seven private sector jobs in three Northwestern Ontario communities. Ontario's Young Entrepreneur Program is supporting: DC Productions and Music Studio - a recording studio in Kenora offering production services, instruction and promotion of local bands. TY-GR Construction - a construction and renovation business in Fort Frances focusing on residential, cottage and commercial buildings and Precision Auto Body - an auto repair and body shop launched in Sioux Lookout. The NOHFC is providing $25,000 to each of these projects under its Young Entrepreneur Program, which helps northern residents aged 18 to 29 start their own for-profit business in the North.

Careless Driving Leads to Collision

Sunday, Kenora OPP were called to a collision that occurred on Highway 17 East around Little Joe Lake. A west bound tractor trailer was stopped waiting to pull into a turn around. Another unit stopped behind the first, when a third unit felt the need to pass. The third unit struck the first unit as it was attempting to pull off the highway pushing it into the ditch. The eastbound lane of the highway was blocked. As a result, three persons were taken to Lake of the Woods District Hospital and released shortly after. The driver of the passing tractor trailer unit has been charged.

ICSP in Sioux Lookout

The Municipality of Sioux Lookout has undertaken the development of an Integrated Community Sustainability Plan (ICSP). An ICSP is a long term plan, developed in consultation with community members, that will provide direction for the community to realize sustainability specific to cultural, economic, environmental, and social dimensions of its identity. Theft of Gas and Vehicle

On Friday, Dryden Police were called to the Safeway Gas Bar after a male driving a PT Cruiser drove off without paying for his gas. About an hour later, officers spotted a similar vehicle west bound on Highway 17. A check on the vehicle revealed it had been reported stolen in Quebec. Officers stopped the vehicle without incident and arrested the 26 year old male driver. He has been charged with theft over $5000 and was remanded into custody to await a bail hearing.

Saturday, Dryden Police were called to a Van Horne residence with regards to a domestic assault. A2 year old male was charged with assault and will appear in court in March.

Attack in Dryden

Dryden Police would like to advise the public that they received a complaint regarding an assault and theft that is alleged to have occurred on the King St. underpass in the early morning hours of Sunday. The male and female victims were attacked while waking home from the bar by two females and one male attacker. The female victim was knocked out and her black and white Baby Phat purse was stolen which contained all her ID and $200. Green Techonology Funding

Research into the development of low-cost, more efficient lighting is creating over 14 jobs over the next three years in Thunder Bay. With assistance from the Northern Ontario Heritage Fund Corporation, Lakehead University and Meaglow Ltd. are establishing a state of the art semi-conductor research laboratory at the University. The project is focusing on developing new crystal growth technology that could produce brighter light-emitting diodes (LED's) at a lower cost. Since 2003, the NOHFC has invested nearly $490 million in more than 2,800 northern projects leveraging an additional $1.5 billion from project partners.

Saints Win Against Pelican Falls

Sunday night, the Saint Thomas Aquinas Saints boys hockey team took to the road for the last game against Pelican Falls. The Saints played a very discipline game only taking one minor penalty. Twelve of the Saints players had a multi-point game. The Saints came out on top with a 22-2 win. The Saints next home game and last of the regular season is Wednesday at 7:00 pm vs Sioux Lookout. Montague Case Update

More than five years have passed since Bruce Montague was arrested with an unregistered firearm at a Dryden gun show in September 2004. In the time since, his constitutional challenge of the federal firearm registry was dismissed and he and his wife have been convicted of a combined nearly-30 firearm related charges. Upon conviction on 26 of the more than 50 charges faced, the former gunsmith and competition shooter was sentenced to 18 months in custody, handed a lifetime firearm ban and spent more than 25 days behind bars before being released on bail pending an appeal that was heard in a Toronto courtroom Thursday. The argument was heard and was completed in less than two hours. The Crown's response was submitted in about half-hour and the Justices anticipated their decision would be released shortly.

ShelterBox Helping Haiti

Kenora resident and ShelterBox response team leader Ron Noseworthy departed Friday for Haiti to take part in the international humanitarian relief mission. Noseworthy will be working with a six-person ShelterBox team to familiarize himself with the logistics of ShelterBox shipments arriving in Haiti from the neighbouring Dominican Republic and to help coordinate distribution of tents and supplies. The team has been in Haiti for several weeks and is scheduled to be replaced. Noseworthy will stay behind to lead the replacement team and anticipates his deployment will extend to mid-March. Bridge Over Mink Bay Creek

Kenora Urban Trails Committee is proceeding with plans to install a pedestrian foot bridge over Mink Bay Creek at the fork of West Bay Road. The bridge will complete the Mink Bay trail system, forming an eight to 10 kilometre loop from the trail head at Hwy. 17 West, to Mink Bay, Keewatin Memorial Arena, through downtown Keewatin, along Keewatin Beach and back to Hwy. 17. Construction of the $30,000 bridge is expected to begin in late spring.

OPP Superintendent Accused

An OPP Superintendent is facing fraud and theft charges for submitting faudulent expense claims. The accused was the manager of the First Nations Policing Section of the OPP at the time of the offences. He's also accused for fraudulently accepting money, loans and using an OPP watercraft. He's been suspended from duty and will appear in court in March, to answer to the charges.

Non Resident Fine

A Winnipeg man was fined $3,250 for purchasing Ontario resident licences to hunt moose. He has pleaded guilty to making a false statement in a document to obtain a licence and to hunting moose without a licence. The Ministry of Natural Resources reminds hunters that as of January 1, 2009, non-resident hunters and anglers are required to have a non-resident Outdoors Card in order to purchase an Ontario fishing or hunting licence, except for a one-day fishing licence. Bruce Montague in Court

Northwestern Ontario gun activist Bruce Montague is in a Toronto appeal court today looking to overturn 26 firearms-related convictions against him and have the federal gun registry scrapped. Montague, who was arrested at a Dryden gun show wearing an unregistered rifle in 2004, was sentenced to 18 months in prison after a jury found the former gunsmith guilty in December 2008. Montague was released after 25 days behind bars pending this week's appeal. A number of Montague's supporters are expected to rally before the hearing begins.

After two years at the head of the Kenora and District Chamber of Commerce, Dwayne Yaremko is no longer holding the position. Ten years after he last held the presidency, Andy Scribilo is set to lead the business organization into a period of greater unity and focus in the business community. Scribilo was thrilled with the crowd of over 240 entrepreneurs including MP Greg Rickford who attended Wednesday's annual general meeting to hear a speech from John Gale, the man who would remake Kenora for the tourism economy of the 21st Century.

Fatal Collision on Highway 17

Ontario Provincial Police have identified two Geraldton residents as the victims of a collision on Highway 17 yesterday afternoon. Officers were called to a collision involving a tractor trailer unit and passenger vehicle at 1:45 PM. The collision occurred approximately 1.5 kms east of Willard Lake Esso when a west bound tractor trailer unit came around a corner to find an east bound passenger vehicle in the west bound lane. The driver of the tractor trailer was unable to avoid collision with the vehicle. Members of the OPP Technical Traffic Collision Investigation unit were called to assist with the investigation. Kenora fire and rescue were also on scene to assist with clearing of the roadway. 64 year old Raymond Buhr and 62 year old Joann Buhr of Geraldton Ontario were fatally injured as a result of the collision. Highway 17 was closed at the time of the collision to allow for the examination of the scene; it was reopened approximately 4 hours later after debris had been removed from the roadway.

Paperkings 4th Best in Ontario

The Dryden Peewee AA Paperkings continue to edge closer to becoming best ranked peewee AA team in Ontario. The squad moved up 2 spots in the rankings in the last week and is now rated the 4th best squad in Ontario out of 114 Peewee AA teams according to the major amateur hockey ranking organization "My Hockey Rankings" which came out February 17. The Paperkings have established a very impressive 51-5 win/loss record overall for the season racking up 325 goals with only 61 against. The Paperkings have won 4 major Championships across Northwestern Ontario and a silver medal in U.S. and will now head to Thunder Bay to attend the Norwest Tournament on March 5 to finish off a stellar season.

Funding for Women's Place

Greg Rickford, Member of Parliament for Kenora, was pleased to announce funding for a Youth Internship at Women's Place Kenora yesterday. Women's Place Kenora will receive funding of $27,000 to hire a Youth Intern to promote economic independence for women, focusing on urban Anishinaabe women and youth. Funding for Local Trails

Greg Rickford, Member of Parliament for Kenora, visited with students and staff from St. Thomas Aquinas today. He was pleased to announce funding of $2,000 for improvements to local urban trails. This funding comes through the Society for Educational Visits and Exchanges in Canada (SEVEC) which operates with the participation of the federal government through Canadian Heritage. This funding has gone toward the purchase of tools including a brush saw and safety equipment. Outdoor Education and Environmental Science students both this year and in years to come will assist in improving and maintaining the nearby Rabbit Lake Trail System.

Charges for Illegal Hunting

Please Don't Feed the Deer

The Ministry of Natural Resources reminds people that it is not necessary to feed local deer this winter. There is good natural food available this year such as twigs and foliage. Deer change their behaviour in winter as the snow deepens, moving into thicker forests and relying upon established trails to move to and from feeding areas. LHIN's New Executive Officer

The inaugural chief executive officer of the North West Local Health Integration Network is stepping down. Gwen Dubois-Wing, who has held the top position since the organizations were created to integrate regional health services in 2005, worked her last day with the network on Friday. The board has yet to meet to devise a schedule for replacing Dubois-Wing but in the interim, the torch will be passed to Laura Kokocinski, the network's senior director for planning, integration and community engagement.

Bus Purchase

Kenora City council authorized city fleet superintendent Mike Mostow to pursue a purchase agreement for two public transit buses, one for Kenora Transit and a specialized bus for Kenora Handi-Transit. The purchase is proceeding through terms and conditions as set out in the city's request for proposals with Metrolinx. The municipality anticipates significant cost savings in the acquisition of the two buses through Metrolinx compared to purchasing the buses separately from commercial providers.

RIDE Program Charges

Dryden Police arrested an impaired driver on early Friday morning as a result of a RIDE Program. Officers were set up on Van Horne Avenue near Government Dock and had the opportunity to check a vehicle driven by an 18 year old female from Eagle River. She was found to have been drinking and it was revealed she was impaired. She was subsequently charged with impaired driving.

Mischief Charge

Saturday morning, officers were called to a parking lot on Queen Street by a vehicle owner who had returned to her car to find the windshield shattered. Witnesses in the area, provided information with resulted in the arrest of a 25 year old female from Dryden. She has been charged with mischief under $5000 and will appear in court at the end of March.

Liquor Related Charges

Dryden Police dealt with a number of liquor related calls over the weekend, which resulted in a 23 year old male being held in the cells overnight. While in custody, the male broke the cover on the smoke and fire alarms and damaged a mattress cover. Subsequently, he has been charged with mischief under $5000.

Underage Drinking Charge

Dryden Police officers were called to a Nymark Road residence shortly after midnight on Monday morning, regarding a party and underage drinking. One arrest was made as a result and a 15 year old youth has been charged with resisting arrest, obstructing police and minor consumption of alcohol. The youth was held overnight and released with an April court date.

Break and Enter

Dryden Police are investigating a break and enter which occurred to an Airport Road residence Tuesday sometime in the early afternoon. The resident advised that he left the home for approximately an hour and returned to find that someone had entered and stolen his prescription medication. This matter is under investigation and anyone with information is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS.

Drugs Seized in Red Lake

Sunday, member of the OPP Red Lake Crime Unit and members of the Red Lake Detachment executed a search warrant on a residence. As a result of the investigation, a sizeable amount of marijuana, hashish and paraphernalia was seized with an estimated street value of $1700. A 27 year old male has been charged and is scheduled to appear in Read Lake Court in April.

Warrant Held

Dryden Police hold a warrant for the arrest of a 19 year old Dryden man as a result of an incident reported last week. It was reported that the suspect had entered his residence along with another male and assaulted the male who reported the incident. Subsequently, the charge has been laid. Injuries to the victim were not serious.

Dryden Budget Approved

Dryden City Council has approved the 2010 City Budget with a tax increase of 3.9% The budget is still relying on a $1.4 million dollar fund from the Province of Ontario. Without this funding, a large deficit will be left to the city and cuts will have to be made in capital, service and budget levels. The 2010 Budget includes $23.5 million in operational spending.

Break and Enter in Lake of the Woods

Members of Kenora OPP are investigating a number of break and enters to camps on Lake of the Woods which occurred last weekend. Officers attended a number of camps on Survey, Kipling and Quarry Island where suspects forced their way in. Once inside the camps were trashed including extensive damage to furniture and other property. Kenora OPP officers have also received complaints to a number of ice huts in the area where the Break and Enters occurred. Fire on Theil Road

Oxdrift & Dryden Fire Service's were dispatched by 911 to a Theil Road garage fire yesterday. On arrival crews found a large garage fully engulfed in flames. Three attack lines were put into place to knock down the main fire within 1 hour, while multiple small explosions occurred inside the garage, and propane tanks were wetted down outside against the garage. Four Dryden Fire units and 14 Firefighters, assisted for two hours, Oxdrift Fire had five units and 10 Firefighters on scene for about 3 hours, to mop up the burnt out garage. No injuries were reported. The cause of the fire is under investigation by the Oxdrift Fire Department, & O.P.P.

Snowmaching Collision

Friday, Kenora OPP officers responded to a complaint of a snow vehicle running into a portable garage on Villeneuve Rd in Kenora. Officers located an 8 wheeled ARGO on the Winnipeg River. Occupants attempted to flee police but were unsuccessful; the operator of the vehicle was impaired and was arrested. As well the passenger was arrested for obstructing police. A 29 year old male was charged with impaired driving and Dangerous operation of the vehicle. Another 26 year old male also of Kenora was charged with obstructing police.

Stolen Snowmachine

On Monday police received a complaint of a snow machine stolen from a parking lot in Ingolf. The owner reported that some time between Friday and Saturday his 1990 Polaris Indy was stolen. The snow machine is blue with Manitoba registration 711R5.

Test Scores to Improve

Earlier this week, trustees passed an ambitious agenda for improving test scores at the Keewatin-Patricia District School Board. By the end of the school year, the strategic plan approved Tuesday night would also lay the groundwork for significant increases in graduation rates and aboriginal achievement. One of the two main goals set out by Keewatin-Patricia last week was to have all students achieving at level 2 or higher on the standardized tests, with 75 per cent of all students at a passing grade or higher. Trustees will also be working with staff to increase the percentage of graduates, until 90 per cent earn a diploma.

Pair Charged with Murder

After eight days of hearings, the pair charged in relation to a murder behind the Tower Motel nearly a year ago are scheduled for further preliminary hearings in March. Each are each facing charges of second degree murder, attempt to obstruct justice and mischief. The pair was in court for four days late August and an additional four late January. Preliminary motions are set to resume March 3. The pair was arrested after the body of Edward Wilson, 43, was run over by a westbound CP Rail train in the early morning hours of March 21, 2009.

Week of Action Against Poverty

A bannock bake-off, super soup and pancake breakfast are all part of a full slate of activities, as Kenora gears up for the Week of Action Against Poverty. On Wednesday, the emergency shelter will offer flapjacks to patrons, as the annual tradition continues. NeChee will host the bake-off Thursday, while youth from Kenora-Patricia Child and Family Services will host the super soup. All benefits are going to the Fellowship Centre, which faces another budget crunch in April. Making Kenora Home has also put together another booklet entitled Voices from the Shelter, which will be formally launched at Hojo's Friday evening. The calendars will be sold in order to help the local homeless shelter.

In the Northwestern Health Unit's Market Square office that once offered audiology services, private company Expert Hearing Solutions has opened for business. Noticing the prominence of Kenora residents at its Thunder Bay clinic, the company decided to set up a satellite office in the city and a coming outfit in the health unit offices in Dryden.

Jaws of Life Needed After Collision

Sunday 12:30 am Wabigoon Fire received a 911 emergency dispatch to attend to a single vehicle collision near Brown Bay road in Southworth Township just east of Dinorwic. Automatic mutual aid was also dispatched in the form of Dryden Fire Service Rescue unit 25. On scene, Wabigoon Command Heavy Rescue 42 discovered a single tractor trailer unit had left the highway and ended up on its side, down a 60 foot extremely rocky embankment. One occupant was able to get himself free of the cab and was assisted by firefighters to safety. The second occupant was trapped in the cab. Wabigoon and Dryden fire crews worked together to extricate the patient using the "jaws of life and heavy cutting tools". It took 12 firefighters from both teams to safely transport the patient up the rocky slope to the awaiting ambulance. Fire crews remained on scene to secure the vehicle for removal. The patient was transported with non life threatening injuries to Dryden Regional Hospital, OPP are investigating the cause.

Early Learning Program

The Keewatin-Patricia District School Board will begin to provide a full day of learning for four and five-year-olds at Pinewood School in Dryden and Evergreen Public School in Kenora as of September 2010. The program will be phased-in over time, with full implementation to occur in all publicly-funded schools in Ontario by the 2015-2016 school year. Registration for the Early Learning Program begins in February 2010. Parents/guardians may contact the school's office to register their child using the school's kindergarten registration process. Funding for First Nation History Project

Greg Rickford, Member of Parliament for Kenora, announced yesterday federal support for a First Nation History Project under the Government of Canada's New Horizons for Seniors Program. The First Nation will receive $25,000 for the History project which will support an intergenerational project for seniors to create a book to preserve their traditions and history. This will allow them to share it with the younger generations in the community. With two additional components of the New Horizons for Seniors Program, Capital Assistance and Elder Abuse Awareness, the overall budget of the Program is now $35 million per year.

More Funding for First Nations

Greg Rickford, Member of Parliament for Kenora, announced yesterday federal support for the Seniors Out and About Project under the Government of Canada's New Horizons for Seniors Program. The Eagle River Seniors Friendship Club will receive $15,295 for the Seniors Out and About project. This funding will support an intergenerational connection in the community with seniors having a movie night, sewing classes and bbq events. In a remote community such as Eagle River with limited facilities this will allow seniors and children to interact more and reduce isolation. With two additional components of the New Horizons for Seniors Program, Capital Assistance and Elder Abuse Awareness, the overall budget of the Program is now $35 million per year.

Kenora Forest Feasibility Study

Kenora Forest Products owners got some good news Wednesday as they received $25,000 for a feasibility study. The company has been looking into the development of a biomass energy plant, as well as wood pellet production at their Kenora sawmill. These innovative projects could help the company reduce costs of energy consumption, according to the release from the Northern Ontario Heritage Corporation. Ontario Power Generation has already issued requests for input, as it considers shifting from coal-fired energy to pellets at its Atikokan power plant.

Animal Endowment

The Kenora and Lake of the Woods Regional Community Foundation launched a $50,000 animal welfare endowment fund on Wednesday. A local couple have provided the capital to launch the endowment, which will be invested as the market returns will fund Kenora animal rights organizations in perpetuity.

LNIN Seats Full

Joy Warkentin will settle into the final available seat on the North West Local Health Integration Network's governing board. Her background is as a registered nurse with a Masters degree in education. She was associate dean of academics and health sciences at Confederation College before being hired on as the vice-president of academic serivces at Fanshawe College in London, Ontario. With her appointment, the board's nine director positions are full with four members living in Thunder Bay, two (including Beazley) in Fort Frances, one in Marathon, one in Terrace Bay and one in Sandy Lake. Directors are appointed for terms of one to three years, subject to a six-year maximum.

Snowmobilers Reminded

The OPP are reminding snowmobilers that they need to ensure they are compliant with the Motorized Snow Vehicles Act. Many of the rules governing motor vehicle drivers apply to snow mobile operators. Examples include speeding, failing to stop at a road crossing and driving with blood/alcohol levels exceeding the legal limit. Failure to comply with the law carries penalties including fines, loss of licence, criminal charges and/or imprisonment.

Break and Enter

Dryden Police are investigating a break and enter which occurred sometime during the afternoon yesterday at Wilson's Trailer Park. A home was entered by cutting a screen, opening a window and unlocking a door on the south side of the residence. Once inside the home was rummaged through, and an X-Box game console, digital camera and night goggles were taken. Police are asking that anyone who may have seen someone suspicious in the area yesterday sometime early in the afternoon to call Cime Stopper at 1-800-222-TIPS.

Collision Leads to Charges

Saturday, Dryden OPP were notified of a motor vehicle collision on Baptist Church Road. After further investigation, it was learned that the 19 year old driver had been consuming alcohol. As a result, he has been charge with driving while impaired and driving while under suspension of licence. He is scheduled to appear in Dryden Provincial Court on Monday March 29th.

Quebec Drivers Charged

Last Thursday, Dryden OPP were conducting traffic enforcement on Highway 17. A 22 year old male driver from Quebec was charged with racing a motor vehicle when he was clocked doing 104 km/h in a 50km/h zone. His drivers licence was seized and his vehicle was impounded for seven days. Later, a search of the motor vehicle also produced a quantity of drugs and drug paraphernalia. A 21 year old male from Quebec has been charged with possession of a controlled substance. Both of the accused are scheduled to appear in court in March.

T.A. Boys Hockey

Tuesday night the Saint Thomas Aquinas Saints boys hockey team took to the road against Sioux Lookout Warriors. The game was fast paced and hard hitting for three periods. The Saints came out on top with a 5-4 shootout win. Steve Halverson lead the Saints with two goals. Discipline was key for both teams, each team only took 5 minor penalties. The Saints next home game and last of the regular season is Wednesday February 24th 7:00 pm vs Sioux Lookout.

KPDSB Board Meeting

KPDSB Trustees met at Ear Falls Public School on Tuesday for a regular board meeting. The fifth presentation of the 2009-2010 Seeds for the Future - Celebrating Our Stars initiative titled 'Experiential Learning: Learning Through Reflection' was received by Trustees. Dean Carrie, Interim Chief Executive Officer, presented the Strategic Action Plan update. Trustees voted to send a letter to the Minister of Education requesting an increase of one trustee, to provide a total of ten elected members, for the 2010 and subsequent school board elections. The next board meeting will be held March 9 at Ignace Public School.

Put Kenora on the Board

The City of Kenora is seeking the support of its Northwestern Ontario neighbours to "Put Kenora on the Board" to include Kenora in the new Canadian version of Monopoly. Kenora is the only city from northwestern Ontario competing for one of two spots in the wildcard race. Banff and Niagara Falls are also in the race. Kenora has garnered strong local support to secure one of the top 10 spots and is now reaching out to friends and neighbours from the region and across the country to get on the Board. Paperkings 6th Best in Ontario

Days after their 51st win of the season, the major amateur Hockey ranking organization "MY HOCKEY RANKINGS" now lists the Dryden Peewee AA Paperkings as the 6th best Peewee AA team in Ontario. The February 10 rankings track games involving all 114 Peewee AA teams across Ontario as well as most competitive AA and AAA teams and stats across Canada and the United States. The Paperkings now have a 28-5 record against other Peewee AA teams from Ontario, Manitoba and the US and have compiled an impressive 51-5 win/loss record overall this season winning 4 Championships and a silver medal.

Trustees of the Keewatin-Patricia District School Board are pleased to announce the appointment of Jack McMaster to the position of Director of Education effective March 22, 2010. McMaster brings an extensive background in both teaching and administration to the position of Director of Education. He began his teaching career in 1980 and joined the Dryden Board of Education in 1986. Since that time, he has held positions as a classroom and physical education teacher, vice-principal, principal and superintendent of education before leaving Keewatin- Patricia in 2005 to take the position of Director of Education for the Rainy River District School Board. The appointment to Director of Education is subject to the approval of the Ministry of Education and the negotiation of a mutually acceptable personal services contract.

Illegal Bait Smuggling

Two Minnesota residents have been fined a total of $1,300 after attempting to smuggle live bait into Ontario through the Canada Customs Entry Station on Sand Point Lake, Rainy River District. The ministry reminds anglers that it is illegal to transfer live fish or live spawn from one body of water to another without the authorization of the ministry. In addition, non-residents cannot trap minnows for bait. To report a natural resource violation, call 1-877-TIPS-MNR or call Crime Stoppers anonymously at 1-800-222-TIPS.

PACE Project of the Year

PACE is pleased to announce Project of the Year Award goes to Brad Woodworth from The Northwest Ontario Windsurfing club. NOW started 5 years ago out of the growing demand of area residents asking for windsurfing lessons. The club has approximately 40 members to date and holds lessons every Sunday at Sandy Beach Park in Dryden from June through until September. The club is in partnership with the City of Dryden for use of the park during club activities. Members are mostly from the area including Sioux Lookout, Ignace, Vermilion Bay, Dryden and even as far away as Thunder Bay! Deer Population Declining

Studies indicate the Kenora area's deer population continues to decline following a peak in 2006/07. The trend is also expected to result in a similar drop in the numbers of wolves roaming the rural hinterland along with the decline of their preferred winter prey. According to Kenora district MNR biologist Bruce Ranta the populations of both species are affected by weather and available food sources according to a 20-year cycle influenced by spruce budworm infestations.

Bully Law in Place

If your child is having a hard time in the classroom, new policies and procedures from the Ministry of Education are meant to help. If teachers see an incident of bullying, they're now required by law to report it to the principal, who must then contact parents of the victim involved. The new reporting measures came into effect February 1st and they've been adopted by both local school boards. Similarly, the policy on progressive disciplinary action has also been modified to reflect recent changes in provincial laws.

Monopoly Campaign

Tourism Kenora is stepping up its campaign to have the city claim a spot on the special Canadian edition of Monopoly. A rally is planned for the Kenora Recreation Centre beginning this morning to kick off the campaign. School students will be putting on a hockey game to promote Kenora's reputation as a hockey town. City businesses are jumping on the bandwagon with posters and window displays. Kenora Monopoly money with the web site address printed on it is being distributed so people know where to go to vote online February 8th to 21st. Residents and supporters are urged to make Kenora one of two wild card spots on the board by voting at monopolyvote.ca.

Surplus in Hospital Budget

The Lake of the Woods District Hospital's third quarter budget results show a surplus of $436,000. Savings came from unfilled administrative staff positions, where nurse managers were covering for two vacant positions. The surplus will be dedicated to painting patient rooms and other overdue cosmetic work. Senior administration put the responsibility for the surplus clearly in the hands of its staff, saying the 2008 budget crisis transformed the culture of health management. The third phase, now underway, is the final leg in the $4.9-million project, for which the community was tasked with raising $490,000 through the Lake of the Woods District Hospital Foundation.

Multi Car Collision

Highway 17A was re-opened yesterday around 5pm after a multi vehicle collision near the Meadows Lake Bridge just before noon. There were no injuries but the highway was closed for about 5 1/2 hours due to the size and number of vehicles involved and to allow some minor repairs to be made to the roadway. The Kenora OPP has been investigating the cause of the accident but so far no further details have been released.

Car Entry in Dryden

Dryden Police are investigating a vehicle entry which occurred last evening on Queen Street. Although it appears nothing was taken, Police cannot stress strongly enough that vehicle owners ensure that the doors are locked, and that nothing of value is left inside. This is crime of opportunity-don't give anyone the chance.

Breaching Probations

Police have two males in custody as a result of breaching conditions of their release orders. An 18 year old male was arrested after a complaint regarding his disruptive behaviour. He was located a short time later, highly intoxicated, along with a female youth, who was also intoxicated. Both were held overnight and were transported to Sioux Lookout for their respective bail hearings.

Busy 2010 for Crime Stoppers

Crime Stoppers of Northwestern Ontario and Northern Minnesota is pleased to report that 2010 is off to a very busy start. When comparing January 2009 with January 2010, tips resulted in a 100% increase in the number of drug related issues being solved, a 200% increase in the number of people charged with crimes and the Crime Stoppers program paid out rewards that were 500% greater than the year previous. The increases come on heels of Prime Minister Stephen Harper's announcement that January 2010 was "Crime Stoppers Month". Nationally, this meant an increase in exposure for every program. Locally, media outlets and police partners continued to promote a message of safe communities, being aware of your neighbourhoods and reporting any situations that look suspicious. Looking ahead, Crime Stoppers of Northwestern Ontario and Northern Minnesota has some aggressive plans and it includes novel ways to promote our message and provide ways for individuals to keep their families and communities safe.

Redditt Winter Carnival this Weekend

The 65th Annual Redditt Winter Carnival takes place this weekend, 25 kilometres north of Kenora on Highway 658. Redditt resident Sandra Korobanik has been carnival coordinator for the past 18 years and is always looking for volunteers willing to lend a hand organizing events and staging activities over the three days. Carnival weekend kicks off Friday evening with a family supper at Redditt Community Club. Saturday's activities feature a curling bonspiel with 12 teams competing for honours at the two rink community club ice surface. The Royal Canadian Legion Redditt Branch 82 is also hosting a social and dance Saturday evening. Sunday activities get underway early with a pancake breakfast at the community club starting at 10 a.m. For the outdoorsy types the fish derby gets underway on Basket Lake from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. with anglers competing for prizes.

Driven to Quit Challenge

More than 168 people in the Northwest region have already committed to quit smoking this March by registering for the Driven to Quit Challenge. Disturbance Arrest

Dryden Police arrested a 25 year old male yesterday morning after a call was received regarding a disturbance at a Colonization Avenue residence. The man was located on St. Charles Street and was found to be intoxicated. Upon returning him to Dryden Police Services, he became aggressive and assault one of the arresting officers. He has been charged and will be held until his court date Monday.

Overpass Robbery

Dryden Police officers are investigating a robbery that took place on Saturday. Police were advised Tuesday that a man had be assaulted in the north stairwell of the pedestrian overpass at 11:30pm by three people, possible 2 males and a female. The victim said, the three came up behind him, pulled his jacket over his head and then stole a gold ring, cash and prescription medication. The victim suffered a broken nose and a possible eye socket fracture as a result. Officers are asking anyone with information to call Crime Stopper at 1-800-222-TIPS.

Graffit Leads to Arrest

Wednesday, Dryden Police arrested a youth for breaching the conditions of a probation order. This arrest prompted the investigation into some acts of mischief noted in the pedestrian overpass and also reported at a Second Street residence. Found in the overpass and on the garage door of the residence were gang related graffiti. As a result, the youth has been charged with breaching the conditions of his probation and two counts of mischief.

Yesterday morning, officers noted a male on Casimir Avenue, who was unsteady on his feet. Upon stopping to check him out, the male identified himself as a male who was currently on probation and shouldn't have been drinking. As a result, he was arrested and held until sober. He has been charged with breaching the conditions of his order.

KPDSC School Closure

Kenora's school review committee certainly has its work cut out for them following an emotional meeting Tuesday. As the committee wrapped up its tour of the five Keewatin-Patricia District elementary sites being considered for closure, committee members again heard pleas to keep their small neighbourhood schools intact. By comparison, the overall enrolment figures at the Kenora Catholic District School Board have remained stable over the last two years. After five meetings, two sites with the Keewatin-Patricia District School Board stand out from the statistics presented by staff during their community meetings. One is Keewatin, due to its declining enrolment. The other is Valleyview due to its repair costs.

John Fafferty Calls for Action

A Northwestern Ontarian NDP MP struck at the government over competitiveness in the forestry industry, claiming high-ranking officials are not holding key policy meetings during Parliament's proroguation. MP for Thunder Bay-Rainy River, John Rafferty accused Finance Minister Jim Flaherty of stalling to meet with AbitibiBowater and the Communications Energy and Paperworkers Union of Canada to address the $1.3 billion pension shortfall plans. With the issue coming down to the wire in March and 30,000 pensions in the lurch, a party release accused the government of having no excuse not to be meeting with the company and the union.

Ride for Rehab

The Ride For Rehab returned to the lake as 39 snowmobiles roared out of the gates of the Kenora Recreation Centre on Wednesday morning. Riders from Kenora and Dryden are joining those from as far away as Yellowknife to whip through the woods southward to cross the border and sled a circle south of Baudette, Minnesota before returning to Kenora for a dinner at the Best Western Lakeside Inn on Saturday night. While all riders are paying $500 for their entry fee, they receive one ticket to win the ride's first-ever donated skidoo for every additional $250 they raise for the cause. The Children's Rehabilitation Foundation serves 15,000 children with special needs as far away as Nunavut including an estimated 1,000 living in Northern Ontario.

Kenora Distric Municipal Association Issues

Kenora City Councillor Jim Parson cited solar energy, forestry, Highway 17 twinning, homelessness/ affordable housing and water quality as issues of interest at the Kenora District Municipal Association annual meeting in Ear Falls, February 4-6. Parson is the sole delegate representing Kenora city council at this year's district municipal conference. In addition to attending presentations on a wide range of topics delivered by municipal, district and provincial representatives, delegates will discuss resolutions for consideration at the Northwestern Ontario Municipal Association annual meeting in Marathon, April 21-24.

Collision on Lakeview Drive

The Kenora Highway Safety Unit attended a motor vehicle collision on Lakeview Drive in the City of Kenora on February 1st at 1:30pm. Officers found a downed hydro pole and debris on the roadway. As a result, the roadway was closed for a short period of time. The driver was take to the Lake of the Woods hospital by Kenora Ambulance for minor injuries and later released. The driver has been charged with careless driving, failing to wear a seatbelt and having an expired permit.

Busy 24 Hours for Sioux Lookout OPP

Yesterday was a busy day for Sioux Lookout OPP. Officers charged 3 people and are looking for a forth stemming from 4 separate incidents. One person remains in police custody while two others were released with court dates. Tuesday, OPP responded to a call of intoxicated males at a local business. Further investigation revealed on of the men was on probation, he was later charged. Later Tuesday, OPP responded to another call for an intoxicated male at a local hotel. Further investigation revealed he was previously released from custody with conditions he failed to comply with, he has been charged. Also on Tuesday, OPP responded to a call for a domestic dispute where an assault had taken place. An 18 year old male was arrested and charged. Lastly, a 19 year old Sioux Lookout female is now wanted for not complying with her release conditions.

Technology and Vocational Training Cancelled

As part of a province-wide restructuring action from Employment Ontario, the local Academy for Technology and Vocational Training outlet on Chipman Street will see its contract expire. Having been in business in many capacities locally for two decades, the future of the academy to be based in Job Fair, which had its core funding cut for 2010 but is expecting to be running in 2011.

Arbitration Possible for Con College

Confederation College president Pat Lang said Monday there hasn't been a decision yet on whether to go to arbitration with its unionized faculty. Her comments come just hours after the Ontario Public Service Employees Union set a strike date of February 11, adding it would consider going to arbitration in order to avoid a strike. Lang felt the college had made a good final offer, and she was disappointed members hadn't been able to vote on it. She also regretted the situation is becoming a source of anxiety for students.

OPP Business Plan

A draft copy of the OPP's latest business plan, presented to the Police Services Board at a meeting Thursday, is focusing on tackling substance abuse and youth crime in Kenora. Detachment commander Insp. Dave Lucas outlined the draft, and said drug, alcohol and other substance abuse in the downtown core, a factor in 95 to 99 per cent of crime in Kenora, he claimed, is a priority for the force.

The service vehicle is equipped with an extraction system, so there is no chance of spillage with any fluids. He can provide onsite welding services, windshield replacement and light repair services. This venture was a passion of Adam's and with funding from PACE and the Northern Ontario Heritage Fund through the Young Entrepreneur Program has become a reality.

Nursing Back in the North

Lakehead University President, Fred Gilbert, and Confederation College President, Patricia Lang, announced plans to explore the offering of a second collaborative community based BScN Nursing program, in the fall of 2010. The first collaborative community based BScN was offered in 2005 in Dryden, Sioux Lookout, Kenora and Fort Frances and met with great success. The proposed second program offering will be delivered at four regional campuses and is contingent upon a minimum enrolment of 32 students.

Vehicle Loses Tires

Last Thursday, OPP officers were informed of a pulp truck that had lost a set of dual tires as well as another separate tire on Highway 17. OPP located the truck and have charged the 48 year old driver with operating an unsafe commercial motor vehicle. The OPP would like to remind motorists to report all incidents involving unsafe conditions to their local Police.

Weird January Weather

January saw abnormal weather patterns throughout most of Northwester Ontario with rain, freezing rain then snow. Dryden and Ignace OPP responded to 23 motor vehicle collisions that were attributed to poor road and weather conditions. Saturday, member of the Dryden OPP were conducting patrol on the ice road located at the end of Van Horne Avenue at the Government Dock. OPP stopped a snow machine and discovered the 70 year old male driver had been consuming alcohol. As a result he has been charged and is scheduled to appear in Dryden Provincial Court on Monday, March 15th to answer to the charge.

Officer Hit in Kenora

Friday, shortly after 10 PM an OPP constable was conducting traffic control on Vetrans Drive at Fourth Street in Kenora when he was struck by a vehicle. As a result, the officer was taken to the Lake of the Woods Hospital for non life threatening injuries and a section of Vetrans Drive was closed for several hours. Members of the OPP Technical Traffic Collision Investigation Unit attended to assist officers with the scene examination. Investigation is on going at this time.

Truck and Snowmachin Collision

Friday, shortly after 11 AM Kenora OPP officers were called to a collision at Sabaskong Bay on Lake of the Woods. At the scene, officers found a collision between a truck and a snow machine on the ice road. Members of the OPP Technical Traffic Collision Investigation Unit attended to assist officers with the scene examination. As a result the operator of the snow machine was killed. Investigation is on going at this time.

Death in Fort Frances Collision

Fort Frances OPP continue to investigate a motorized snow vehicle collision that claimed the life of a Fort Frances man. OPP officers, Treaty Three Police Service along with Fort Frances Ambulance and Fire Department responded to the scene of a head on collision involving two snow machines last Thursday morning. A 33 year old man was killed when his snow machine collided with a second snow machine while on a trail north of School Road and south of Highway 11 in Couchiching First Nations Territory. A female passenger and the male driver of the second snow machine were taken to hospital with non life threatening injuries.

Rail Collision in Dawson Township

Sunday, OPP officers were called to the CN Rail Crossing at Atwood Road #2 in Dawson Township following the report of a vehicle colliding with a CN Rail train. The incident occurred at approximately 9:30 AM when a southbound van collided with a slow moving westbound train. Four occupants of the van were taken to Rainy River Hospital with non life threatening injuries. The train crew was not injured in the collision. OPP and CN Rail officials continue to investigate the cause of the collision.

Distracted Drivers Bill

Dryden Police are reminding residents that cellphone calls could cost drivers a lot more starting yesterday. The grace period is over for enforcement of Ontario's Bill 118, Countering Distracted Drivers Act, popularly known as the cellphone driving ban. If you get caught talking, texting, e-mailing or watching movies while driving, you could be facing a $155 ticket, plus a $25 victim surcharge and $5 court administration fee, bringing the total to $185.

Forestry Issues

Forestry issues topped the agenda for Kenora city council, as they made their pre-budget submission for the province by teleconference Thursday. Kenora city council's request asked for a guaranteed wood supply as mills try to revamp their production. They also looked for some assurance that Queen's Park would also take into account the social and economic impacts on communities dependent on logging, when new legislation was introduced. The city's request comes as both iLevel and Kenora Forest Products are hoping to add staff, in order to take advantage of a rebound in the American housing market. According to the brief, the Weyerhaeuser plant adds 1,500 jobs and $60 million in salaries to the local economy, while Kenora Forest Products would like to invest $30 million in expansion plans, as well as rehire 105 staff. However, both are heavily dependent on access to the Whiskey Jack Forest, where the impasse over wood rights continues.

Heart and Stroke Study

A Heart and Stroke Foundation study released this week warned of a "perfect storm" of poor health indicators will place an "unprecedented burden on Canada's fragmented system of cardiovascular care" as the baby boom generation ages. The study addresses demographics by age as it observes physical inactivity, obesity, smoking, high blood pressure and diabetes rates. The rising statistics of poor heart health swerved across cause and age including an 18 per cent rise in obesity, a 45 per cent rise in diabetes and a skyrocketing 77 per cent increase in high blood pressure across all generations. In Northwestern Ontario, these indicators have traditionally been comparatively high and while the new figures show a comparative climb, conditions are not improving. The most glaring is the region's obesity or overweight indicator, which weighs in second highest overall and levels out the scale at 64.1 per cent of the population compared to a 51.6 per cent provincial average. Nor'Westers also have the second most common rate of high blood pressure at 20.9 percent to an average of 15.2 per cent.

Kenora Third in Monopoly vote

For three straight days, Kenora has stood in third place on the Monopoly Leader Board. On January 15th, the iconic board game announced all the real estate was up for bid on its new Canadian version. Choosing 65 larger cities to compete for the top 20 spots on the Monopoly board, it also kicked off a contest for smaller centres to express their pride through two wildcard spots on the board. Kenora was ranked fourth by the end of last weekend before moving into medal territory on Tuesday. Each computer can vote daily until February 7 at monopolyvote.ca. The top ten cities will then play off for the two wildcard properties, with the second round of voting to commence the following day.

Grant Money to Common Ground

There was one central idea on the table for the $1,500 grant offered to Kenora by the Community Arts and Heritage Education Project on Tuesday evening: Common Ground. Known as "Finding Common Ground Through Creativity," the proposed project poses the question: "What does the land mean to you?" Partnerships have begun forming for the cultural artistic exploration of shared space. Although discussion remains to see what form it will take, the cooperative ideal of Tunnel Island will be its physical location and philosophical space.

Northern Places to Grow Act

About a dozen young professionals attended a session with the Ministry of Northern Development, Forestry and Mines Wednesday to provide the next generation's feedback on the Northern Places To Grow Act. The 68-page draft document will become a legally binding development plan that will last until 2036 when some of those present might have grandchildren. Organizer Mike Greaves expressed appreciation for the diversity of views expressed around the table. He was particularly interested by the discussion that arose from the report's insistence on resource-based economy as the future of the North.

Drugs Recovered in Red Lake

Tuesday, members of the OPP Drug Enforcement Unit, members of the Red Lake Detachment and the Red Lake Crime Unit executed a search warrant on a residence in Red Lake. As a result, over $30,000 in drugs and cash were seized. Five people were arrested and charged under the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act with two counts of possession for the purpose of trafficking and one count of possession of property obtained by crime contrary to the Criminal Code.

PACE General Meeting

Patricia Area Community Endeavours held their Annual General Meeting on January 19th. Greg Rickford, MP attended the meeting, and congratulated PACE on their hard work and commitment to help stimulate the economies of the communities within the region. In the past year PACE through the grants of the Local Initiatives Fund has contributed over $102,000 to community organizations encouraging community development growth and capacity building in the non-profit sector within the eight communities throughout PACE's region. PACE has approved over $800,000 this past year in loans assisting local businesses with start up or expansion funds within our region. Through a contract with Employment Ontario, PACE also delivers the Self Employment Benefit Program within the region. This past year over 40 individuals have been provided direct assistance through this program.

More Details on Highway Collision

At 7 AM yesterday, members of Kenora detachment assisted by members of the Highway Safety Division attended the scene of a collision on highway 17 approximately 40 kms west of Vermillion Bay. A west bound Tractor Trailer lost control on the highway and was struck by a second tractor trailer also west bound. One of the units was pushed off the roadway while the second blocked both lanes. A west bound passenger van approaching the tractor trailer units managed to avoid a collision but left the roadway striking the rock cut. One of the tractor trailer unit drivers was taken to Lake of the Woods District hospital and was treated for minor injuries. The highway was closed for 3 hours while officers investigated the collision and emergency crew cleared the roadway. Police report that the local roadways are still ice covered in places and all drivers should drive with caution. Ensure you keep your distance from other vehicles on the highway.

Salvation Army Donations Up

Despite last year's economic uncertainty, the Salvation Army collected an all-time high $18 million in Christmas kettle donations in Canada. While client demand increased between 10 and 40 per cent across Canada, the food drives and Christmas hampers were stretched but donations came through both nationally and locally. The local kettles were short on human resources but pulled in $1,300 more than last year. The annual mail-out receipts are up more than $4,000. The Salvation Army has seen an increase of 30 per cent, from 50 to 70 families each month.

Defamation Trial to Proceed

A defamation, negligent investigation and malicious prosecution lawsuit launched against the provincial police by the former grand chief of Grand Council Treaty 3 can proceed to trial, a judge has ruled. Superior Court Justice Donald J. Gordon made the ruling on Leon Jourdain's lawsuit Monday after hearing on a Crown motion to dismiss all claims was heard in September. Jourdain is suing the provincial police in the aftermath of a sexual assault allegation made against the former grand chief in February 2004. A week later, Jourdain was arrested. The charge was withdrawn in October of that year, but not before Jourdain had stepped down as grand chief just three months into his term. Jourdain is suing for $2 million in general damages and $500,000 in punitive damages. The individual who made the allegation against Jourdain has been named as a defendant and is being sued for $250,000.

Impaired Drivers Charged

Members of Kenora detachment removed two more impaired drivers from our highways yesterday. At 1 PM officers stopped a vehicle down town Kenora. The driver was found to be impaired. He was arrested and returned to detachment for tests. The 61 year old male of Kenora has been charged with impaired driving. At 7 PM Officers responded to a report of a vehicle collision with a tractor trailer on 9th street in Kenora. The driver of the vehicle had been drinking and was arrested and returned to Kenora Detachment. A 63 year old male was charged with impaired driving as well as charged with driving while his licence was suspended under the highway traffic act. None of the drivers were injured during this incident.

Distracted Drivers Legislation

Drivers are reminded that Bill 118 has been in effect for three months now. This bill prohibits the use of cell phones or other hand held communication or entertainment devices while driving. Officers have been warning drivers since the legislation started although some charges have been laid if felt appropriate. The suggested warning period comes to an end in February 2010, the set fine for using these devices while operating your vehicle is $125.00. This legislation does not take away from the use of cell phone if drivers feel the need to make a 911 (emergency) call and as long as you are, pulled off the roadway, not impeding traffic and legally parked.

Funding for Fellowship Center

Directors with the Kenora District Services Board called on the province to provide core funding for three to five years in an effort to support emergency shelters in the district. Queen's Park threatened to cut off funding for the Kenora Fellowship Centre just before Christmas, but reluctantly agreed to extend it until spring. The board will be asking for year-round support.

Ambulance Duties Shared

Kenora Directors endorsed a deal to share ambulance duties in the Sioux Narrows area with crews at Whitefish Bay First Nation. Since many of the overnight calls are in the First Nation, the board agreed it made sense to share duties with the crews working there. While providing more effective response times, the deal should also save the services board about $100,000.

Pinecrest Seeking Accreditation

Pinecrest Home for the Aged administrator Kevin Queen intends to pursue accreditation for the long-term care facility in 2010-11. He acknowledged although additional government revenue ranging from $0.33 to $0.40 per bed per day is available to provincially accredited health care facilities, Pinecrest has focused on improving the quality of life for clients rather than commit staff to the costly and time-consuming process. In addition to Pinecrest, the accreditation process must be repeated at Princess Court in Dryden and Northwood Lodge in Red Lake also operated by the District of Kenora Homes for the Aged.

2010 Budget Under Fire

During Monday's special meeting, directors with the Kenora District Services Board again sent staff back to the drawing board for further reductions to the 2010 budget. After much discussion, directors agreed to ask staff for a one per cent reduction in the local share of the $45 million budget. This is equal to about $130,000 on a total of about $13 million.

Snow Related Accidents

Members of Kenora detachment were called to a number of collisions on highway 17 and 17A this weekend. Sunday afternoon officers responded to an eastbound tractor trailer which left highway 17 in the area of Dogtooth Lake. The driver was taken to Lake of the Woods District Hospital for minor injuries. Police are reminding the public to give road crews time to clear the highways before traveling. Also be alert to emergency crews that will be removing vehicles from the ditches today. We are expecting winter conditions with temperatures dropping over the next few days, allow extra time to travel. If traveling a distance be sure to take appropriate care, check road conditions prior to leaving. Drive safe, Stay Alert.

Sioux Lookout Power Outage

All Sioux Lookout Hydro customers including Hudson & Alcona will be affected by a Power Outage occurring on Sunday, January 31st from 10am until 2pm. This outage also includes Hydro One Customers on Hwy 72 South, Alcona and Frenchman's Head. Hydro One will be performing emergency maintenance at the Sam Lake Distribution Station.

Bottle Breaking Leads to Charges

Dryden Police had three young people in custody last week as a result of a disturbance complaint on Victoria Street. Police were called after residences witnessed kids out on the street breaking beer bottles. A 19 year old male, a 15 year old female and a 16 year old female have been charged with breaching the conditions of their probation orders and failing to comply with release conditions from a previous charge. All three have been charged under the Highway Traffic Act with disposing of glass in a public place.

Waldhof Train Derailment

A multi-car train derailment took place just before 10:00am Monday in Waldhof, 6km east of Vermilion Bay. CP Rail Senior Manager of Media Ralations Mike LoVecchio confirms 17 cars from an eastbound grain train left the tracks. No injuries were reported at the scene, there were no regulated commodities involved and no risks to the public. Crews were deployed to the site immediately and LoVecchio says it is top priority for the railway to get the clean-up completed and service restored on the main east-west CP Rail line, which is important for commerce in Canada to move from west to east. LoVecchio adds an investigation will commence once rail service has been restored.

New Ambulance Base in Kenora?

If zoning issues can be satisfied, then Kenora may have a new ambulance base, finally. However, there are still some hurdles to overcome, as the city continues to work with service board members. The potential site for the ambulance base would be on Railway Street, across from Olson Honda next to the car wash. The new building would replace the current station, which is in the old laundry building at the hospital. Paramedics have been looking forward to an upgrade from their existing space, which has become overcrowded and cold. Service board members have been working with the city on this issue for many years. Details of the transaction were not released, as the deal is still in progress.

Highway 17A Re-opened

Highway 17A near Kenora is once again open following a closure caused by poor road conditions due to weather. Commercial traffic re-routed through Kenora experienced futher problems while negotiating the town's traffic circle. With the aid of tow trucks and sanders the trucks stuck on airport hill were eventually cleared after almost 3.5 hours. Police continue to caution motorists to drive with care during this period of poor weather.

Motor Theft in Sioux Lookout

Thursday, January 7th, Sioux Lookout OPP responded to a theft of a boat motor from a local dealership. Last Wednesday, OPP arrested and charged a male with the theft of the stolen motor. A 32 year old male has been charged with theft under $5000 and possession of stolen property.

Oxycontin Drug Bust in Sioux Lookout

Thursday, the Sioux Lookout Northwest Region Criminal Investigation Unit and the OPP executed 2 search warrants at 2 separate locations in Sioux Lookout. Three people were arrested and police seized a large quantity of Oxycontin pills with a street value of over $15,000. Police continue to investigate all matters related to bootleggers and drug traffickers. The Red Lake OPP have arrested and charged several youth involved in damaging the Warm Up Shack at the outdoor ice rink in Balmertown. Thursday, officers charged 4 fifteen year old and one 16 year old with mischief under $5000.

Impaired Driver Charged

Early this morning, a Kenora OPP officer received a report of an intoxicated male operating a U-Haul van leaving a gas station in Kenora. The van was located on Highway 71 near Rushing River Park at 4:30 AM. The driver was intoxicated and arrested for impaired driving. Officers noted that 36 year old Jeff Andreasen of Winnipeg Manitoba was currently disqualified from driving. Andreasen was charged with impaired driving and driving while disqualified, he was held for a show cause hearing at Kenora court this morning.

Picnic Table Vandalism

OPP have recently received complaints of items such as picnic tables being thrown onto the ice, this most recent case was just out from Husky the Musky. In areas such as this the ice conditions are not safe. Consider some well meaning member of our community attempting to retrieve this table and going through the ice. Fines for Illegal Deer Hunting

A man has pleaded guilty and was convicted under the Fish and Wildlife Conservation Act for the illegal hunting of deer. He was fined $2,500 for trespassing to hunt and $1,000 for failing to affix a valid game seal tag to his harvested deer. He is also prohibited from hunting in Ontario for the next two years. Funding for Dryden Centennial

Greg Rickford, MP for Kenora, on behalf of the Minister of Heritage, congratulated Mayor Anne Krassilowsky and all Centennial Celebration committee members today. The Government of Canada through the Community Historical Anniversaries Programming will support Dryden's 100th Anniversary Celebrations with funding of $154,000. Dryden's Homecoming Week will be July 30 till August 8 with the kick-off parade scheduled for Saturday, July 31st. They are looking forward to welcoming current and former residents, family, friends and visitors to the many events and activities that will mark this wonderful milestone.

HST Protest

NDP supporters are sponsoring a town-hall meeting Thursday evening as the party brings its province-wide protest to Kenora. By introducing the new Harmonized Sales Tax, taxpayers will have to pay more for gas in their car, home utilities, condo fees, children's clothing or a funeral for a loved one, according to the party. While there's already some taxes paid on these items, the list of taxable items is expanded under the new HST, which combines the eight per cent provincial sales tax with the five per cent goods and services tax from the federal government. It's set to go into effect July 1. Thursday's meeting is at 6:30 p.m. at the Super 8.

Winter Campaign

A new advertising campaign promoting winter tourism in Kenora kicks off in Winnipeg and southern Manitoba next week. Tourism Kenora and Kenora Hospitality Alliance are partners in the "Snow Excuse" campaign which includes billboards, a newspaper supplement and radio and magazine advertisements to promote winter attractions, events, activities, restaurants and accomodations in Kenora.

Nursing Program Back

The president of Confederation College, Pat Lang, personally confirmed the good news. The Lake of the Woods Campus will again be accepting applications for students in their Bachelor of Science program that has a focus on nursing. In all, there will be 32 spots open for candidates, who would start their courses in September.

Liquor Related Incidents in Dryden

Dryden Police dealth with a number of liquor related incidents over the weekend. Friday evening, officers were flagged down and advised of two intoxicated persons walking on St.Charles Street. Two female youths were arrested and held overnight and charged with minor consuming. Officers were also called to the Dryden Arena friday evening regarding some youths causing trouble. As a result, three of the males were charged with minor consumption of alcohol and three others were warned regarding their behaviour. Later that night, officers were advised of some minors acting suspiciously in the Thunder Drive area and as a result arrested at 17 year old youth for minor consuming, who was charged and turned over to his parents.

Breaching Probation

Saturday evening, Dryden Police officers observed a female on Arthur St., who appeared to be heavily intoxicated. The 25 year old was arrested and investigation revealed that she had been released on conditions in relation to charges laid in Sioux Lookout. As a result, she has been charged with three counts of breaching these conditions. She was held in custody and will appear in court this morning.

More Thefts in Dryden

Dryden Police are investigating a theft from a motor vehicle on Sunday evening. The owner advised that her vehicle was entered while parked on Queen Street, and a small blue camcorder was taken from the glove box. Once again, people are reminded not to leave valuables in their vehicles, even if they are locked.

RIDE Program

Dryden Police conducted a RIDE program on Friday at various locations throughout the city. Approximately 100 drivers were spoken to and one warning was issued for seatbelt use. Officesr are charged three people with various driving offences over the weekend, one of which was careless driving against a Hamilton man.

The Ontario Association of Chiefs of Police is pleased to announce that applications by community groups are being accepted for the 2010 OACP Substance Abuse Grants Program. The purpose of the grants is to initiate and support programs that deal directly with drug prevention and/or information sharing involving youth with communities. Applications are available on the OACP website, oacp.ca and must be received no later than Friday, April 16th, 2010.

41 Calls in Sioux Lookout Over the Weekend

Between Friday and Monday, Sioux Lookout OPP responded to 41 calls for service. During the busy weekend, police arrested 20 people and charged 15 people with various offences including bail violations, an assault, a mischeif and drug offences. Several of the occurrences involved alcohol with six calls involving youth and one young person brought to the hospital due to her level in intoxication. The police will continue to investigate all matters related to bootleggers and drug traffickers. There is a Blood Clinic being held in Kenora today and tomorrow at St. Thomas Aquinas High School. Paperkings Win Again

The Dryden Peewee AA Paperkings added a fourth AA championship to their trophy case and second in just the last week by now winning the Robin's Classic Peewee AA Championship in Thunder Bay on the weekend. The Paperkings had just won the Fort Frances Peewee AA Championship last weekend. Dryden defeated the Thunder Bay Elks 82's 8-3 in the championship final Sunday. The Paperkings now have 4 golds, 1 silver and sport a 45-3 record for the season.

Pierre Chamberland of corporate communications in Orillia said the OPP received three complaints from Pikangikum First Nation members, who were upset by a photo of a suicide victim seen on Facebook. He added they had forwarded the information to the Independent Police Review Director, as required by legislation, who had returned the matter to the OPP for further investigation. The spokesman noted the leadership from Pikangikum and the Chiefs of Ontario had been contacted. The image has since been removed from Facebook.

Funding for Green Buildings

Trustees with the Keewatin-Patricia District School Board voted Tuesday to spend just over $3 million on 23 of their buildings, in order to save energy and become more environmentally friendly. In Kenora, projects include just under $256,000 at Beaver Brae Secondary School, roughly $76,000 at Lakewood, an estimated $73,000 at King George, just over $67,000 at Valleyview, more than $60,000 at Keewatin, close to $32,000 at Evergreen, as well as almost $20,000 at the board offices in Norman. Many of the projects include improvements to lighting and automated systems. Another $34,000 is projected for Sioux Narrows, $130,000 for Red Lake - Madsen and $100,000 for Red Lake District High School. The board has received just over $3.1 million from government grants for doing the work. Trustees hope to save just over $250,000 annually in energy costs by doing the upgrades.

Lineup Announced

The lineup for the Jets Alumni & Friends vs. Kenora Paramedic Code Blues was announced Friday morning, bringing a dozen former NHL stars to Kenora next weekend. The team that will skate before goaltending comedian Jimmy Mack has decades of professional hockey experience and will be playing at the Kenora Recreation Centre at 2 p.m. on Sunday, January 24. The team will be led by Ray Neufeld, a four-time 20-goal scorer who played with the Winnipeg Jets, Boston Bruins and Hartford Whalers.

Fraud in Dryden

Dryden Police are disheartened to be investigating the defrauding of one of our community's seniors. A while back, the CBC reported that seniors were being contacted by a person posing as one of their grandchildren, saying that they were in trouble and needed money. It was then revealed, the caller is not related and any money sent was stolen and not recovered. This fraudulent scam has claimed a large sum of money from a Dryden senior. Residents are urged to contact other family members to confirm the whereabouts of their relatives before sending money, even if they beg you not to tell Mom and Dad.

Snowmobilers Trespassing

Police were called to Eagle's Landing over the weekend in regard to a complaint about snowmobiling. A snow machine had driven on the golf course. This is trespassing and will result in charges. Dryden Police remind riders that they are permitted on trails and public property, but must stay off private property unless permission has been given.

Sioux Lookout Drug Bust

Last Wednesday, the Combined Forces Organized Crime Unit, the Sioux Lookout Northwest Region Criminal Investigation Unit and members of the Sioux Lookout OPP executed a search warrant on a Sioux Lookout residence. As a result, police seized a large quantity of Oxycotin and Oxycocets with a street value of over 44 thousand dollars. Two males have been charged with possession and trafficking. The OPP continue to investigate all matter related to bootleggers and drug traffickers. Anyone with information is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS.

Snowmobiler Compliance

The OPP and the Ontario Federation of Snowmobile Clubs are reminding snowmobile riders that to have fun and peace of mind this winter, riders must ensure they are compliant with the Motorized Snow Vehicles Act. Many of the rules governing motor vehicle drivers apply to snow mobile operators. Examples include speeding, failing to stop at a road crossing and driving with blood/alcohol levels exceeding the legal limit. Failure to comply with the law carries penalties including fines, loss of licence, criminal charges and/or imprisonment.

Thefts in Dryden

Dryden Police are investigating a series of thefts from motor vehicles which were reported last week. The suspect checked out vehicles and residences on Wilde Street. Later in the week, a vehicle's window was smashed and a purse was stolen. This may or may not be connected to the other thefts. New Businesses Attracted to NWO

Communities in Northwestern Ontario are working to attract new business and strengthen their economies with the support of the Northern Communities Investment Readiness Program (NCIR). The Township of Ignace will study the commercial potential of the local municipal airport with a view to making it a catalyst for economic development. The Township of Emo will complete an inventory of the community's assets to attract entrepreneurs and investors. The Lake of the Woods Development Commission will hold a seminar in Kenora on Brownfields redevelopment. Specialists will explain legislation governing Brownfields, its linkages to other industries, and potential impacts of redevelopment. The Thunder Bay Economic Development Corporation recently held a similar seminar.

Kenora in Monopoly Game?

Tourism Kenora is challenging the citizens of Kenora to show their community spirit by nominating and voting for Kenora to be included in the Canadian version of the Monopoly Game. Kenora is competing against other Canadian City's, which have not been pre-selected, for 1 of 2 available WildCard spots. The Monopoly Vote website indicates that voting for the top 10 most nominated cities will commence on February 8th, 2010. We would like to see Kenora receive sufficient nominations to be included in the voting process. To nominate Kenora, people just need to visit www.monopolyvote.ca. You will have to register on the website and then will be able to nominate Kenora. Visitors to the site are able to nominate one city per day.

Rates Hike in Kenora

Kenora residents can anticipate a 0.43 per cent tax rate increase based on the city's budget committee recommendation. Property tax revenue accounts for $19,678,000 of the city's proposed $25.6-million municipal budget. The rate increase will generate $76,358 more in tax revenue over last year to meet the city's tax levy requirements for 2010. Council is set to approve the 2010 budget February 8, subject to change on receipt of the budgets and mandatory levy requirements from the Kenora District Services Board and Pinecrest (District of Kenora Home for the Aged).

Water Study Results

City councillors and staff reviewed the results from the first year of the 2009 Water Quality Study for Lower Black Sturgeon Lake at the planning and property committee meeting Tuesday. The 2009 water quality study provides base line data regarding Black Sturgeon water quality for comparative analysis of water samples for phosphorous, chlorophyll, dissolved oxygen, temperature, algae and other factors affecting lake water quality and other conditions from year to year. The results of the 2009 Lower Black Sturgeon water quality study does not show any decline in water quality compared to the previous study.

Dryden Video Launched

To introduce the Dryden Development Corporation goal for a new and diverse economy the DDC has produced a community attraction video to enhance economic development retention, expansion and attraction efforts. The video "Looking to the Future" was produced with the goal of providing a current snapshot of Dryden’s economic target sectors and will be used to promote these assets to site selectors and new business contacts. Toonies for Torches

Ontario Law Enforcement and Walmart Canada are teaming up to raise funds and awareness for Special Olympics. The Annual Toonies for Torches campaign hopes to raise money and awareness for Special Olympics. From January 15 to January 24, customers are invited to show their generosity at Walmart stores across the province by purchasing a $2 torch to support Special Olympics, which provides sports training and competition for over 16,000 people with an intellectual disability. In 2009, Ontarians raised more than $180,000 for the Toonies for Torches. The goal for 2010 is to raise $200,000.

Sign Bylaw

It's back to the drawing board for city councillors and planners working on the proposed new bylaw governing the type and location of advertising and promotional signs in the municipality. The new draft sign bylaw will be presented for public review and comment at an information meeting yet to be scheduled. Regulations regarding two related matters concerning billboards along Lakeview Drive and themed signs for municipal purposes remain on hold, pending inclusion in the new draft bylaw. Police Budget

Kenora's police services board passed along a $22,815 budget request at a special meeting this morning. The board met to discuss its 2010 budget, which is estimated to come in about $3,000 more than 2009's $19,902 cost. The board, reduced from five members to three since the OPP took over city-wide policing, set aside $12,660 for part-time earnings, $1,000 for potential legal costs, $1,300 for membership in the Ontario Association of Police Services Boards and $7,500 for travel and conference costs. In 2009, the actual budget came in nearly $40,000 under the estimated $57,488. The biggest savings coming from the $25,000 set aside for legal fees during the disbandment process being rolled into the city's transition costs. A final transition cost has not yet been released.

Land Transfer

City council will initiate a land transfer process with the Ministry of Natural Resources by declaring Town Island surplus municipal property. The initiative is preparation for a proposed land exchange with MNR for Crown land. The municipality and the ministry have been negotiating the land exchange since last August. MNR intends to designate Town Island as a provincial conservation reserve which provides protection for fish spawning areas, wildlife, eagle nests, hiking trails, beaches and public recreational uses. In exchange, the city will receive Crown land of equal value within the municipal boundaries. The city could develop the properties for residential and recreational use to generate revenue through initial land sales as well as ongoing property taxes.

Maclean's Recognizes NWO

This week's issue of the national news magazine Maclean's includes a report on improvements to Keewatin-Patricia's sound systems, which make it easier for students to hear their teachers. The article noted how the innovation is being looked at by school boards across the country and noted how even young children were able to retain more of the lesson due to the better quality of sound.

iLevel Good News

Finally some good news for local mill workers. The persistent rumours about adding a new shift at iLevel by Weyerhaeuser have proved to be true, as management confirmed they are looking to add 10 people to start in mid-March. Currently, there are about 150 people employed at the Kenora operation. The iLevel operation on Jones Road was up to 225 employees, before layoffs in January 2007. After announcing $1 billion in losses last quarter last spring, Weyerhaeuser laid off 480 staff in March, but stuck with the local operation, saying it hoped for a turn-around in 2010.

Renovations Done at Beaver Brae

All the hard work and disruptions have paid off as staff and students officially celebrated the completion of the third and fourth phases of renovations at Beaver Brae Secondary School Friday. The work for the four phases took four years and cost about $10 million, acknowledged Larry Hope, who remembered serving as principal at the school during the renovations. The final two phases were done simultaneously over the last two years and included the overhaul of guidance and students services office, the staff room, all administrative offices, the main offices and the revamp of the upper tech wing. State-of-the-art circulation, heating and cooling systems along with a state of the art dust collection system was installed.

Dryden Paperkings Champions

The Dryden Peewee AA Paperkings added a third championship to their collection by winning the 8 team Fort Frances Boston Pizza Royals Peewee AA Championship over the weekend. Dryden defeated the Springfield, Manitoba Ice Hawks 5-2 in the championship final Sunday. The Paperkings record now improves to 39-3 for the season.

Collision Leads to Injury

On Sunday Kenora OPP attended a collision on highway 17 approx. 40 kms east of Kenora. The collision involved a single Tractor Trailer unit that rolled over after leaving the highway. The driver a 54 year old male from the Toronto area received spine and head injuries and has been transferred to Winnipeg in serious condition. The highway was closed for an hour while officers investigated the scene; investigation into the collision is ongoing.

Snowmobile Trails Vandalized

On Saturday OPP received a complaint that all the postings and signs for the snow machine trails beginning in Keewatin have been vandalized. OPP are reminding the public that most of the work done on marking and maintenance of these trails is done by volunteers for the enjoyment of the users. In some cases removing posted signs or markers could result in operators going to areas that may not be safe. If anyone has information that may identify those responsible for these incidents, they can call police or Crime Stoppers.

Charges for 18 year old Drinker

On Friday evening OPP conducted ride checks on Transmitter Rd. in Kenora. Officers detected the odor of alcohol, from a driver and requested he provide a sample into the roadside Alcotest. After registering a fail the driver was arrested and returned to Kenora Detachment. An 18 year old male from Kenora was charged with impaired driving as well as consuming alcohol under the age of 19.

Driven to Quit Challenge

Dryden has launched The Driven to Quit Challenge across the Kenora District. The Challenge asks tobacco users to commit to quitting smoking for the month of March to be eligible to win prizes such as a Ford Escape hybrid. The launch is taking place at the Dryden Regional Training and Cultural Center on Thursday at 2. The Northwest Health Unit encourages all smokers and tobacco users in the region to show their drive to quit smoking this year. Challenge entrants and their support buddies are encouraged to obtain additional support while attempting to quit. Additional support is provided by the Canadian Cancer Society Smokers' Helpline at 1 877 513-5333 and www.SmokersHelpline.ca.

Charges for Illegal Hunting

Two Wisconsin hunters have been convicted of charges related to illegal deer hunting. Both were charged under the Fish and Wildlife Conservation Act and fined $2,000 and $1,000 respectively for hunting at night. One man was also fined $500 for shooting from a roadway and is prohibited from hunting in Ontario for three years. His firearm was seized and will be returned once his fines are paid. The other man cannot hunt in Ontario for one year. The public is reminded that it is illegal to shoot from, down or across a road while hunting. LWDH Rejects Request

The Lake of the Woods District Hospital board has unanimously rejected a request from the North West Local Health Integration Network to support its Emergency Room Study Recommendations report. Released by KPMG consultants in September, the 66-page report's highlights include the creation of umbrella organizations to manage standards and practices in the 12 hospital emergency departments across the region, transportation, community support and human resource issues.

Kenora Rates May Increase

Kenora residents connected to city water and sewer systems can expect to pay more in the coming years. City administration advised council at Thursday's budget committee meeting to consider implementing an annual five per cent rate increase for the services over each of the next five years. If council approves the recommendation in the 2010 municipal budget, the initial rate increase will go into effect on July 1.

Greyhound Update

A month after a self-imposed deadline for service cuts, Greyhound has continued to offer twice-daily departures from Kenora. Whether bus riders are heading west to Winnipeg or east to Dryden and Thunder Bay, there are morning and afternoon times for each direction, according to the company's on-line schedule. However, the long-term future of these routes remains uncertain, as the company continues to wait patiently for governments to respond to its call for action.

Drug Bust Near Sioux Lookout

Thursday, OPP attended the North Caribou Band Office at the request of a local band councillor and arrested a male for various drug related charges. After a brief investigation, OPP discovered a quantity of Oxycodone pills, over a pound of Cannabis and a quantity of one other drug. The 19 year old has been charged with 3 counts of Trafficking and one count of Breach of Probation. The police will continue to investigate all matters related the bootleggers and drug traffickers. Fines Increase in Dryden

Dryden Police would like to inform drivers in the Dryden area that as of January 1st many of the fines under the Ontario Highway Traffic Act have increased significantly. In particular, any violation in relation to seat belts of child car seats now start at $200, failing to stop for a red light is now $260 and failing to slow when passing an emergency vehicle will be $400.

Stabbing in Kenora

Wednesday, members of Kenora Detachment including the detachment Crime Unit were called to a Minto Ave. address in Kenora. It was reported that a fights had taken place which resulted in persons being stabbed. Officers attended the location and were able to locate two injured males ages 23 and 27 years old. They were transported to Lake of the Woods District Hospital. One victim was treated and released; the second was treated and held for observation. None of the injuries are considered to be life threatening. Officers located and arrested 21 year old male from Kenora shortly after the incident. A second 17 years old male also from Kenora was located and arrested Thursday afternoon. Both accused persons have been charged with aggravated assault and assault with a weapon.

Zero Alcohol Campaign

The Ontario Federation of Snowmobile Clubs (OFSC) wants all sledders to ride alcohol-free. On the occasion of International Snowmobile Safety Week, January 11 to 16, the OFSC announces its new Zero Alcohol Campaign, which urges every snowmobiler to take personal responsibility for choosing to be 100% alcohol-free prior to going snowmobiling or during any ride. Zero Alcohol is especially timely for Ontario snowmobilers given the increased likelihood of automatic licence suspensions on the trail with new enforcement of the .05 to .08 warn range.

The Honourable Tony Clement, Minister of Industry and Minister responsible for FedNor, announced yesterday a Government of Canada investment of more than $1 million in 21 projects to help official language minority communities (OLMCs) in Northern Ontario make the most of local business and economic development opportunities. The EDI will provide up to $4.5M over five years to encourage sustainable growth in Northern Ontario's Francophone communities. Chemical Spill in Sioux Lookout

Tuesday, a liquid chemical spill occurred outside the Municipal Water Treatment Plant (WTP) on Wellington Street, Sioux Lookout, from a tanker of Sodium Hydroxide (an alkaline product used as a pH adjustment agent in the water treatment process). The cause and quantity of the spill is currently being determined. The spill was quickly contained and cleaned-up thanks to the efficient and professional response from the Plant Operators, the Sioux Lookout Emergency Services/Fire Department, and the OPP. Wellington Street was closed for a brief period of time to facilitate this work. The Public Works Department used sand to soak-up the chemical, and the contaminated snow and sand have been moved to a secure location for ultimate disposal. The Public Works Department closed Wellington Street for a short period this yesterday morning to remove any residual snow and sand from the side of the road.
